so about 2/10 times when i shift hard from 4th to 5th, i honestly dont JAM it over to the right.. but it seems sometimes its just wants to move over into Reverse instead of 5th.. almost as easy as 1-4...
thankfully i have never GOT into gear casue everytime it starts to go into R its grinds so i let go ...
anything i should know, is this normal. is anything going out?
You need to replace the reverse lockout silenoid. It is a real pain to get to, it sits on top of the tranny. Thankfully mine went out under warranty so it didn't cost me anything.
well, you need to stop doing that !
I have never gone into reverse that way so not sure what you are doing or if something is wrong. I do know that in my 02 and now in my 04 you really have to "put" it into reverse.
Get it checked out just in case.
ya that happens in my reverse to.. i have to roll the car a tad sometimes to get it to pop into reverese. but ive had that checked, and ive been told thats just normal and not a problem...
I agree it's got to be a bad reverse lockout solenoid-if it goes bad on a later model Vette (2000 and up,I believe),you have NO lockout,so you need to shift carefully until you correct the problem.
On the earlier models(like my '98) if the lockout solenoid goes south, the car will NOT go into reverse-I'm not sure why GM changed it,but I assume it's because not being able to back up could potentially leave you stranded (or just stuck in your garage,if you're lucky)
I believe from the way you described the problem that it's driver's error. It's just a matter of getting used to the gearbox/shifter. It happens to me occasionally. Nothing mechanically wrong. When you shift from 4th to 5th don't push the shifter too far to the right or you will grind the gears, but if you do, there's a lockout feature which will not permit you to actually put the car in reverse.

this is my DD , i have been driving this for 1.5 years now. while i do thank you for the responce, and will admit im an idiot drivers SOMETIMES. i do not beleive this to be driver error..
this just recently started happening and as i had explained i dont push hard when i shift.. it just wants to go in there smoothly, like a 1-4 shift.
o man who knows.. maybe i do suck..
Please forgive me as I don't mean to hijack the thread, but is there a safety feature on automatics that prevent the car from engaging in reverse while driving. I know that you must push the button on the shifter to go past neutral, but what happens if you do? Thankfully I've never done this and never will but I'm just curious if the car will actually engage in reverse while driving forward.

It shouldn't grind at all. The lockout should prevent you from going any where near Reverse. I've never had the problem at all in the Vette. However in my 5 speed Trans Am, I have a few times grinded the gears when I shift thinking there is a 6th gear which is where reverse is on the TA
Also the shifter alignment could be out of whack that is a contributing cause? But no doubt if you are getting into R then the lockout is the issue. But the adjustment of the shifter is easy and worth checking to see if it helps.
Why are you shifting hard into 5th? Doesn't fourth top out at like 130???
5th isn't even a consideration in the 1/4 mile, lol!! BTW one of the ways to solve that problem is to change ouot the shifter for virtually any of the good aftermarket models (my personal choice is MGW). it really takes a concerted effort to find and get into reverse, lol!!
I just replaced mine - it takes about the same time and effort as changing the oil. A very helpful fourm member helped guide me with some photos. Is located on pass side on top of tranny - you'll see the wires going to it if you look up there. 13mm socket removes the 90 degree elbow that the solenoid is mounted to and then pull it out and put the new one on then reinstall elbo. I found it easier to remove the elec. connector after the elbow is moved out of it's mounting place. Is a little trickier to remove the elec. connector first.
