A pleasant surprise using Shell gas

I had the fuel guage problem when I first bought the car back in 2004. It would drop to empty after a half tank was used. A few times it did this on a road trip from VA to OH, and I watched my mileage to guage when to fill up. A few refills after that, I haven't had the issue since. I can't say for sure whether I refilled with Shell gas during that trip, but I've used Shell almost exclusively for the past 4 years in all my cars and haven't had any problems.
I use Shell Premium in the Vette and the 06 Mercedes E350, and 89 grade in my 96 Tacoma 2wd (290k+ miles) and the wife's 90 Camry (150k+ miles).

Probably for the last 6 months I've found at least three stations who's using "ethanol" free gasoline in my area. I've been using them, so far, I've had the needle bottom out twice from 1/2 full. I've added techron, and again its' fine.

I had the fuel guage problem a few years ago while using Chevron gasoline. I had a friend tell me to use Shell. I have used it ever since and have not had the problem again.

There are no Chrevron stations out here unfortunately but there's a Shell station a quarter of a mile away. This last tank of gas, I did buy it from Shell and as usual, it caused my engine to ping. Not as bad as other gas types but ping it does. There's exactly one station in town that advertises "No Ethanol" gas and when I buy it from there, (increased price), no issue with pinging. So how Shell can be possibly rated as a "Top-Tier" fuel is beyond me. Yes, on the Shell pump, it states its got ethanol up too %10
It has a higher octane number the premum gas 93 vs 105 if I remember correctly.
It will however lower your fuel milage somewhat so from that stand it's a lousy deal.

With the number of "true" Mobil stations drying up here in Jersey I've considered Shell as a good alternative.

that the Shell gas works well for you. I've not had any problems with my gas gauge, but I may start using Shell as they have a station here in town.

I try not to use Chevron or Shell unless i am stuck with it. While i know its good fuel, i dont care for the region where it comes from. but no politics here. I try and use Arco or Valero when ever possible. I have never had a guage problem or pinging. And Ca fuel is only 91 octane.

Chevron all left my area or were bought out by Marathon, whoever they are, so I switched to Shell simply because they are just down the street from my home. Expensive but my vette loves it. BP seems to be purchasing all the gas stations around this part of Kentucky but I won't use it.

The only Shell gas station near me has ethanol and high prices for all of their gas. It's also pretty run down and the pumps never work correctly.
I've never used any of these special types of gas before. Are they that much better than regular gas?

Your local Shell station must be putting regular in the premum tank because adding Ethanol will Increase the octane not decrease it!

My mother had that problem around the same time with shell gas as well. Luckily she saved her receipt and shell covered all costs. Never had a problem with shell after that.

Another Shell user here w/no issues to date. Bought my '99 FRC new in '99 & have used Shell Preimum w/few exceptions. Can't say I've noticed any diff w/10% Ethanol added in Illinois gasoline. Most of my miles came while living in Tx. Understand some Tx Hwys will have a 85 mph speed limit. Wow!
