Head into Downtown into the Gaslamp district. There are few nice bars and restaurants to visit. I recommend the Gaslamp Strip Club (it's a steak place), Whiskey Girl (pretty nice bar to hang out), venture to Petco Park and you'll find the Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery.

North of Balboa Park there used to be a restaurant called the Corvette Diner - not sure if it is still there, but it was a lot of fun and good food.

Pretty vague since there are so many good places i.e Mexican, Italian, Pubs, etc but San Diego Old towne has a number of good mexican restaurants in the immediate area
Cant go wrong with Lamp light District either. A number of good places to choose from there also

Don't forget the Corvette Diner at Liberty Station....
Liberty Station is part of the old NTC base. The diner used to be in Hillcrest (north of Balboa Park as mentioned above).
