Can somebody please give me a quick break down on the differences between a complete engine (like one you would purchase out of a used vehicle) and a crate motor/LS6 long block? As some of you have prolly seen, my motor bit the dust and I am in the process of deciding whether to A. Rebuild... B. New motor C. Crate Motor... or D. Just selling the damn thing and calling it a day haha... anyway. Please just clear up the technical side of things because I'm trying to figure out if the money I save on a long block would end up being spent to install it vs. a motor that would just bolt in complete. thanks guys!
Everything you would need off your old engine for a crate engine should be just fine. Assuming you didnt punch a rod through the oil pan or some such. No sense paying for all that extra gear again. Then again, if the shop you are having do the work likes the corvette tax, they may charge you out the **** to swap all those parts over.
Personally if I were in your position, I would take the opportunity to put a stroker in the car. Lemons to lemonade time. Doing all this work just to get it right back where it started seems silly. At least a 383 or even a 408. Odds are if you shop around you can get a shortblock and heads combo for not much more than a stock ls6 longblock. Again though its all on who is doing your work. You have to trust the shop to do it right and not bend you over while doing it.
If it were me I would make Lemonade. Your bottom end is trashed and your heads are trashed. Find a shortblock, bolt on some heads of your choice and put your stock intake and crap back on it. As you come into money yank the intake off and replace with FAST etc. Stock is usually more expensive to go back to over modified.
