Default 2003 Corvette Bose Radio Problem, Help!

Hello all,

I have a 2003 Z06, and the radio has always been working fine until recently (all stock components, mind you). I was driving and the radio volume just faded out, but the radio was still on.

Next, I noticed if I was just sitting somewhere and turned my radio on the volume would be on and then do then fade away like earlier as soon as I hit a bump in the road. So, this leads me to thinking something is loose? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Try moving the Speed Controlled Volume selector (located behind the volume control) back and forth a few times, and see if that helps. It might have dirty or intermittent contacts on it.

Thats not a problem that comes up often here. SCV would have been my first guess.

The troubleshooting guide suggests checking power connections at the harness before replacing the radio. If the display is staying on you must have power to the radio so that wouldn't help.

All I can suggest is you pull the radio out, check the connector for damage and clean it up with electronics cleaner. If its an intermittent problem it could be a loose connector. Turn the radio on and wiggle the connector around to see if it comes back on.

If no luck, I'd be thinking the radio has gone bad. Can you borrow a radio from anyone to see if another radio works. At least that checks out the wiring looms.

Thanks a lot, DeeGee. I will check the wiring behind the radio soon. But as you said, yes the display remains on but the volume just fades out after a few seconds. Would those wires behind the radio be the only ones to check?

Another note: If I turn the volume all the way up when the volume fades out, I can very SLIGHTLY hear the music coming out, but obviously it is messed up. Thanks again for any help!

It sounds like a short in the radio to me, I had a radio years ago, Non Bose that did the same thing. Just a thought. The radio has rear and front speaker plugs in the back of the radio, If it was a connection issue I would think you would only lose the front or rear, Not both.
Just my opinion.

If it's not the SCV control itself causing the fade, there's probably something internal in the radio going on. A bad solder joint on either an internal component, or on the internal wiring to a connector plug could cause it.

It may be easier and cheaper to just replace the entire radio head unit. Used ones, in perfect condition, are often listed for sale on this Forum for around $100.

Keep in mind that there is an external Bose signal processor that may have some impact on this. On the coupe it is located to the right of the steering column behind the dash.

I will say that the probem is most likely internal to the radio. To test you will need a radio from another C5. The internal electronics for the C5 radio is different than all other models.
