Putting in a new (0 miles) custom cluster in a '99 FRC. It has been modified with bezel rings, yellow tach and electroluminescent lighting. Called the dealer to inquire on programming it to the correct odometer mileage, and was told that THEY would have to install it, because if I do and drive the car, once it starts to count mileage it "locks up", and cannot be reprogrammed. Is this B.S.?

I went through this with another car, They had to keep the car for 3 days while the IP was sent to get reprogramed, That was everything was correct as far as miles go, I have also read it is possible to take the mileage section from your old IP and install it into the new IP, You might contact Steve Doten forum member here about how to do this.
Mr.Bill
As far as locking up I call BS on that. They are just covering thair a$$ because of Fedral laws.
Thanks for the reply. I've got a call in to my (GM Master) mechanic. I'm not inclined to disassemble the new cluster to put an old circuit board in it but I'll check with Steve.
There was a forum member a few years ago from South Carolina that did this. He was selling HUD conversions and clusters to pre HUD cars and programming the mileage to your current miles.
I just cannot remember his user name. Maybe someone will chime in on that. Maybe a search will turn up something.
