I searched first, and answered one question, C5 shift ***** use a 9/16-18 thread and do not require a set screw.
I was wondering if there was anyone out there who's made their own shift *****? When I taught high school metalwork, I made them all the time out of a variety of raw materials. Just wondering what others may have done, and any details to worry about ahead of time?
Thanks!
I cast mine out of aliphatic polyurethane (laughs at the harsh rays of ultraviolet light). Keep in mind that metal shift ***** can get blistering hot, so I have not gone this route. My 68 had a chrome ball **** that would get so hot in direct sunlight that I could use it to form plastic sheet! I had to use a car cover or else people would hear me scream in pain as I drove off.
The best shift **** for the C5 if you drive you're car hard and want to hit every gear with ease check these out I have one and they are amazing! cant beat it for the price and the feel is amazing, I was having trouble hitting the gears with my bbk short shift kit with the stock ****. These are not cheap ***** by any means Ndz also makes high quality delrin and other parts for paintball markers which I have many of and use a lot of there products these are also thread on _very nice_ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/C5-Co...1#ht_837wt_935

Those prices aren't bad. I run a Delrin Hardbar and it is like ~$45 used
I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about...
$140 - $65 = $75.
That sounds about right for a *real* leather wrapped shift ****. I bought my hurst shift **** with NO leather (just a plastic ball) for $65.
If you're going to complain that the price is with a core charge, think about it for sec... How much does GM charge for that exact shift ****? You can buy someone's used C6 shifter for really cheap (like $20 I'm sure), send Denis the ****, and then sell the rest of the shifter mechanism for $10.
I really don't get some of the people on this forum sometimes... It's like they don't do any math for themselves.

.
Don't be such a grouch.
I did the math and the price was too high to me. In addition, my original post was does anyone MAKE their own shift *****. As a former Machine shop teacher I can make one out of almost any hard, safe workable material. hmmm....I have a nice chunk of rosewood in the shop....
In addition, I did not realize that discussing price was verbotten.

Gotcha. I wasn't bashing you or anything. The quote below makes it look worse. My point was that the price is right. For a quality product, that's a good price. But as you've seen, most shift ***** are simply expensive. I've seen a few for about $40, but they also look like they're $40.
I wish I could machine my own shift ****. I have no idea what rosewood would be like as a shifter. But that's awesome you can do that. In that case why buy? I can easily see why spending that kind of money wouldn't be worth it at that point.

No problemo. I don't want to seem thin skinned, either. I come from a family of 'super' DIY'ers, most skilled tradespeople (My Grandma and Aunt had talent too) and I grew up with the attitude there is nothing mechanical we could not learn. I made shift ***** of decorative 'grapes', oversized dice, laminated plexiglass, and all manner of woods. Most I overbuilt so I did not need a metal insert for threads.
Rosewood is VERY hard and dense, can be machined (I made a toothpick holder on a milling machine-talk about overkill!), and using the right abrasive and polish, does not need a finish other than wax or an oil. Gives it a great feel in the hand. I also have an OLD piece of cherry I could do the same thing with. Since I'm still 6 days from getting my first Corvette, I have no idea what I will want for a shift ****!!

That's exactly what I did. The shift **** is mine. Just got it today and gonna put it on a MGW shifter this weekend.
I took it as the $140 was the price with the core refunded

OH! Yeah, that would be stupid expensive. I would agree with that.
You'll get good deals with Double D Mods. That's why they're in high regard here. I've been a customer of many of the vendors on this forum and I call it like I see it. Denis sent me my stuff right away and was there to help out if I needed it. Although, I didn't need any help, it was good to know it's there.
