I was on the Corvette Racing Facebook page a few minutes ago and there was a post there that said the when Dan won the Indy 500 in '05 he was given a Corvette. They are asking everyone that drives there Vette tomorrow to turn your headlights on in honor of Dan.

This is a truly sad thing, I feel for the Family.
I as some of you know I shoot NASCAR races, I was going to be there for the NASCAR truck race and the race yesterday, But I had to change my plans due to a broken arm, I am not sure how I would of handled this if I was there. I hate to see things like this.
Again a very sad day.
My Prayers are with everyone.

What a great and emotional tribute that would be to witness. Was watching the race live here in the UK on Sky Sports where his close friend Johnny Mowlem was a guest in the studio. It was obvious after about 30 mins that the situation was looking terribly grim as Johnny was finding it extremely difficult not to show his obvious distress and relay the terrible news that he had heard but had not yet been made public.

Terrible loss, they showed the crash during the Pats game I believe and said he was airlifted out, not long after they scrolled on the bottom that he had passed. I was at the 500 race that he won, he was second last year too I think. A great loss, if I had a vette Id definitely be participating..

He was a great guy as I met him at the St. Pete Grand Prix a few years ago. He comes from the UK but has call St Petersburg home for some time now. I live in the area and he was well like. He was down to earth lived on a normal street, not a gated neighborhood. The local news here has interviewed some of his neighbors as well as the manager of the local donut shot he would go to. He will be missed.
Tis sad indeed. Don't watch much Indy car racing(other than the actual Indy),,but I AM a car guy and race fan in general,,and am truly saddened by ANY racing loss.It is even more tragic in light of the class act that Dan was,,and leaving such a beautiful family behind!!
I wasn't aware of the headlight salute when I went to local Chevy dealer for oil change this afternoon. Passed one other Vette on the way but she didn't have her lights on either. Sorry I missed it. I love Indy car racing just as much as NASCAR.
oh my I did not know of this fitting tribute either, I will pass it along via facebook to my other automotive enthusiast friends, I will have mine up today for sure!
Very tragic! I was watching the race on tv when it happened. I knew that there were definitely going to be some injuries but I never thought that someone was killed. I guess we have become complacent to the fact that race cars today are extremely safe and drivers walk out of wrecks like that all the time. It was definitely not the case in the 50's and 60's where a driver would die about once a week or two. This event just reminds us all that it is still an extremely dangerous sport.
My heart goes out to his family. As someone else mentioned, he died doing what he loved. We can only hope that is the case when our time comes. Rest in peace, Dan.
