Funny question... What would happen to your engine if you accidentally shifted into second gear instead of fourth at about 100 mph? I have a 2000 corvette and I made that mistake. The engine is making a bad clicking sound now. It gets worse the higher RPMs you go.

As others have said, Pull the valve covers and take a look, Don't drive the car anymore. If you are lucky all you did is broke a spring/Push rod.
Good luck with the repairs, Keep us posted on what you find.

I wish the OP good luck with the repairs. I thought however that the rev limiter was supposed to protect against stuff like this. I guess it can't help in all cases.

The limiter will work on a throttle rev, But not on a mechanical rev.

100% but I'll add one thing, label the push-rods so they go back in the lifters in the right order. Block is pretty tough, I would doubt if the lower end is damaged, but like others have said, Do Not Use It Till it Can Be looked Over By a GM Master technician !
And you'll want to drain the oil and replace the drain plug with a magnetic one. Hope all turns out well for you.
I did that at about 80 soon after I got the car new in 2000. No problems, but a little embarrassed. No weird noises either, so I bet you bent a push rod or broke a spring. Good time to upgrade to hardened push rods and springs. I did this years later on when I had a spring break on me. Not that expensive.
Good Luck!
My car is actually at the dealer right now. I was definitely not going to drive it with that sound in the background. So far they still don't know the issue but one of the guys thinks its bad lifters. Tomorrow I should know exactly whats wrong with it. Thank you all for the help, I've been pricing pushrods, springs, and lifters.
