Default TPMS help

my 2000 vert sat around for a few weeks without the charger hooked up
so when I went to start it the battery was too low, after charging it overnight I took it out for a ride today, started ok but I'm getting a service tpms message and no reading on front or rear tires and can't reset
them, it seems to be related to my battery issue, anybody have any ideas
withoiut taken to a chevy dealer, thanks

You may have to retrain the sensors. Do a search on TPMS and you;ll get lots of instructions. You'll need a pretty good sized magnet to do so. Also most discount tire stores have the "retraining tool" if you want to take it to one of them. Good luck.

I'd try driving a little further first to make sure the sensors are awake and being read.

Default Dive a little and check battery

. Try this.

You can get some strong disc magnets at Home Depot.

Also, check your battery. Is your voltage steady looking at the volts readout on the DIC? It should be 14.2-14.4 V.

Drive the car for a longer distance. If that doesn't wake the sensors up, then try to relearn them with a magnet using the menu on the DIC.

I tried to wake up the sensors with a long drive, but it didn't work, but noticed a new problem, my key fobs don't work. I tried retraining them and can't get past the training message, to get hold lock and unlock message. someone told me the receiver for the tpms and key fob was the same located by the drivers rear wheel, is it possible I blew the receiver when my battery went dead.

You do not have to go through the entire FOB setup after a battery drain. All you have to do is to be in the proximity of the car and hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the fob at the same time until you hear the horn chirp.

You were told correctly. The tpms and key fobs do go through the same reciever. This could be the source of your problem.

It may take a couple of cycles or trips to get the sensor to wake up.

Or it may be the sensor has died, what year is your car and how many miles. It seems very coincidental that the fobs are not working either though.

Just an FYI some people with older cars and older style tpms can upgrade to newer style sensors however to do this you also have to replace the reciever in the car and the key fobs because they will not work with the newer style tpms.

Default TPMS Training Instructions

Here are the instructions for re-training tpms in C5 97-2000

1. Turn the ignition to ON.

2. Press the RESET button in order to clear any IPC display warning messages.

3. Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through the display options until the IPC display is blank.

4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 seconds.
Notice: Refer to Body Control Module (BCM) Programming/RPO Configuration in Cautions and Notices.

5. Press the OPTIONS button again until the "TIRE TRAINING" message appears.

6. Press the "RESET" button until the IPC LEARN L FRONT TIRE message appears in order to begin the programming sequence.

7. Install the J 41760 Tire Pressure Programming Tool over the left front valve stem. (ANY LARGE MAGNET WILL DO)

8. The horn will sound, indicating the left front TPM sensor is programmed.
9. When the horn sounds, proceed to program the next TPM sensor in the following order as directed by the IPC messages:
--LEARN R FRONT TIRE
--LEARN R REAR TIRE
--LEARN L REAR TIRE

Programming Cancellation

1. The programming mode will be cancelled if any of the following conditions are met: The program mode is exited through the DIC.
---The ignition is turned to OFF
---All four sensors have been programmed.
---The TPM system has been in the program mode for longer than 2 minutes and no sensors have been learned.

2. If the program mode is cancelled with less than four codes stored, the receiver will only accept the codes programmed up to that point

Some strong earth magnets (look like hearing aid batteries) from a Hobby Lobby work well.

holding the buttons down did not work, I can't retrain the key fobs, next I'll try the tpms with the procedure, and also check the fuses, I think its the receiver since both fobs and tpms not working, is there any way to test the receiver

Not sure how to test the receiver but you may want to consider upgrading to the newer setup. It almost has to be a receiver problem if both the sensors and fobs will not communicate with the receiver.

First thing is to check the codes and post up.

So far I agree with your diagnosis. If both TPMs and fobs are not working and neither will relearn then its pointing to the RFA (actually called the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver).

Not worth guessing. Thats what the codes are for.

The good news is that if it is the RFA, it's a very simple replacement procedure. It sits in the rear luggage compartment and is easily accessible. Not sure how much a new one costs.

all ok now, i went on the tech forum and did a search for rfa problems, found a thread where a guy had similiar problem and unplugged and plugged his rfa and everything was ok, but went out again, so I treid reseating the connection on the rfa and then did the retraining for the tpms and went out for a ride and got all my readings, then I tried holding the lock and unlock buttons and that worked for the fobs. I don't know if it was the retraining of the tpms or reseating the rfa that fixed everything, but all seems to be ok now.

Thanks for the feedback

Sounds like it was just a bad connection at the RFA. Glad you got it fixed.

For info, did it set any codes?
