Im 34 and always been a die hard Chevy fan which means I clash with the young mustang loving crowd. We all know how mustang guys act. It's annoying. Anyways a young kid just started at my work with a 2012 mustang 5.0. He knows I own a 04 z06 with just intake, tune, catback. He wants to line them up at the dragstrip this year. I'm all for smoking a mustang but not real confident this time. He installed cai, catback, tune putting over 400hp to the rear tires. He also has only raced the 1/8th mile but runs a 8.0 on the dinky 255 wide tires. I can run a mid but closer to consistent high 12's on street tires in the 1/4 but this ones got me thinking. I hate hate hate losing to a mustang. It's probably a drivers race but if he won is never hear the end of it.
Run 'em on a road course. That's where the Corvette really shines, not only with its engine but also suspension, brakes, and adjustability/balance/light weight.
I'm not gonna smack talk the Mustang because for what it is it's impressive. It's also a 2011 vs a 2004. It might be a close race at the drag strip, although I would think the weight would be an issue. At a road course you should take him but you're talking 1/4.
Yea you guys are right on a road course I doubt the mustang brick would come close to the z. Just sucks that now a kid with $30,000 can keep up with me in a straight line.

Between now and the race date, have a 4.10:1 ring and pinion installed in your Z06.
Instant 20% increase in rear wheel torque, improved driveability, etc.
The new 5.0 Mustangs with bolt-ons and a tune are pretty stout. With the driver mod I saw a stock one goes 12.30. A local guys has one and he's gone ~11.70 with just bolt-ons and a tune.
When I first got my Z a couple months ago we raced from a 45 roll. He got me by half a car. I only had a dirty cyclone induction air intake on the car. After a tune, cat deletes and a K&N filter I edged him out a fender. Bolt on Z's with tune and DRs will go ~11.80 @ ~117ish. It's a good run and a drivers race.
Just think about it this way. It took until 2011 for Ford to make an N/A motor produce more than 305hp crank. We've been doing it since 1997.

Dont worry. He will wreck it and mommy and daddy will take it away. Hard to race a vette with a bicycle. BTW,was this the kid?

That's funny! It is true that it took how many years for mustang to finally produce that much power. I am and never will be a mustang fan due to their ugly styling but to have to give'm a hand for finally stepping it up. I guess its just Mt turn to step it up now!
Don't sweat the Mustangs. They're great cars. Just park beside him and ask why his car is so tall and thin? Then peek underneath and ask
"Is that a stick axle in the back?"
Mustangs. Harumph. It doesn't matter how black you paint them, how much chrome you bolt on, how much plastic ground effects junk you glue on, or how many dollars you stuff under the hood ..... it doesn't even matter how fast it goes ..... at the end of the day it is still just a Ford Falcon with a face lift.
[A special note to the humor impared ..... the above was ment to be a somewhat light hearted jab at a competing marque. Don't get your panties in a wad.]

When ever you say let's go to a road course, Crustang boys get happy like your scared. You have lighter weight, as good or better gearing, About equal power and better aero. You also have more room for bigger tires so put some DRs on and put that lil kid in his place! A road course win is a given so he'll never go for it.

just let him know that if you race him in a race of his choice, he has to run you in a race of your choice, a road course or a 145 mph to top end run!!!
I don't know why all the Mustang hate? The FMC has taken a stylish, but underachieving motor/chassis, and really made it perform. The "Boss" version has been compared favorably to a V8 M3, which costs about twice as much. And this is including it's road racing abilities. I'm not advocating trading in our Zs for one, but really; lets be fair.
The new 5.0 mustang runs very well,8.0 in a 1/8 mile is about a 12.55 1/4 mile. Is the mustang a automatic, what does your car run and 60 ft it should be a drivers race.Don't go on street tires unless you can get it to 60 ft very well.
You should win with ease... They are 12.7 @ 111 cars bone stock while our Z's are 12.0-12.3's @ 116-117 stock with the exception of a few who have ran 11.80's stock... I wouldnt sweat it to much just get your launch down and you should do fine...
You should be fine. Practice a few non spinning leaves, and Ranger shift it smoothly. They are peppy, but you should have enough to dust him. DR's are recommended. If he's running them the 60' could be sketchy..
Yea I'm definetly gonna practice more once the tracks open again. Tires are almost shot and gonna get some new wider ones which should help my launch. Even with the old tires I was running low 2.0's 60ft which I thought was fairly good. Hopefully the new tires do the trick. As for the guy saying we should give love to the mustang I can't until they quit making them so ugly. Horsepower good, styling awful.
