Default Cam Install

Well, I finally gave in and decided to do a cam swap in my 02Z. After weeks of toying with the idea I ended up going with an MS4 and PRC double valve spring kit from TSP. Also throwing an ls2 timing chain at it while we're in there as well as a chain damper (really hope my block is drilled for it already). The tear down and install begins tonight so ill be updating with pics and vids as we go!

On a side note, how many of you are running a big cam with different engine/tranny mounts? If you are, which mounts did you go with and how do you like them? If I see that I've got a worn engine mount then this might be in my near future. If not, this still might be in my near future...

Heres the dyno vid

My cam swap starts on Sunday lol. I'm replacing my motor mounts with brand new gm Oem units. Where did you get the ls2 chain? It was discontinued and replaced with the thicker ls9 timing set

I'm just wrapping up my 02 Z cam install and my block was drilled for the chain damper. Where did you get the chain damper from? Install is fun, take your time, use the right tools, and the car will be a beast

I like the idea of a top end cam, I wanted speed over low end grunt... and I love the sound of the idle!

I went with the SNL v4 cam, and should be starting up in a week or so (just got my powerbond balancer today).

Looking forward to watching this progress

Well the tear down went well, the cam came out easily and the ms4 is now in! I am waiting on my chain dampener and spring compressor to arrive so we are somewhat at a stand still for now... Still debating whether to do engine mounts or not, the cradle is loose from the mounts so we are half way there if I decide to. But my stockers appear to be fine. Also ordered a partition, cargo covers and trunk mat today. My hopes are that they cut down on some drone as I am running bullets and catless lt's. Here are a few pics as promised.

MY BLOCK HAS THE DAMPENER HOLES!!!

Ls1 vs ls2 chain.

I was surprised with the difference between ls1 and ls2 chains when I had them next to each other. I see a black C5 Z wheel in the back of the picture, powercoated or painted? looks nice!

Jake, your going to be real happy with that combo. It's going to kick *** and sound really mean. I did my cam install last year and reading your thread makes me remember how much fun I had with the project. You have to have the dyno tune, that's the magic touch.

They are powdercoated matte black 18X10.5's front and rear. There are more pics of it in my garage link but here's a close up.

Almost forgot, the spring tool and dampener both came in today! Also ordered some Hinson short motor mounts today thinking we would be waiting longer for the other two items... Good thing I decided to overnight them(the mounts)! Hopefully they will be here tomorrow so we can button her up for the weekend!

New mounts are the right choice. I am thinking that engine is going to shake a bit!

Nice choice, I believe a Fast 102 will fit under the cowl when using those mounts.

Last night the new valve springs went in with ease. The Proform LS valve spring tool is worth its weight in gold! We also used compressed air to hold the valves in place. Slid the new chromoly pushrods in then buttoned up the top end. Since the engine mounts get here today, we installed the dampener and oil pump then called it a night. The dampener really cuts down on the amount of play the timing chain is allowed to have Tonight we should be able to get everything else done and hopefully fire it up! Here are some more pics! Hopefully Ill have a video to post after tonight!

If I were you, I would replace that small round blue\oil pump gasket in your picture. There have been many people said they looked fine and then had to pull it apart again to replace that dang gasket because of real low oil pressure.

It also happened to me on my Silverado cam swap. A real pain. I pulled it off and inspected it. Looked to be in great shape...but it never sealed good. Well worth the $1.50 right now.
