Default MPG On your C5?

I need to get a better highway car, and we are really considering selling the C3 and picking up something else.. and I refuse to sell something like that and buy a Nissan Versa or some other rediculous vehicle. We just can't really justify having 4 vehicles for 2 of us, and we need my truck and my wife refuses to give up her Infiniti.

Anyways, what are you guys getting MPG wise on the highway? Auto or stick? Tire size? Im trying to justify picking up a C5 for my commute which is 55 miles each way with at least 50 of that being open highway.

And I am sure this has been asked - I searched but on the terms I tried I couldnt find any good threads - they all broke down into debates for some reason.

My stock m6 FRC (3.42 gears) got over 30 on the highway with the stock tire size.

H/C/I it now gets about 27.

C5's are fantastic highway cruisers.

my 2002 auto avg. is 21-23 mpg around town and 28-30 mpg on highway...unless, of course, you stomp on it a lot.

Driving home from New Jersey after picking up the car, I averaged 29.2 MPG! Bone stock 4K mile '04 ZO6.

Although, combined driving is a different story - even if I'm driving like a grandma, I only average ~19 (mostly city, some highway).

My super high mileage '99 gets 21 in town and 32-34 highway. My '07 gets 20 in town and 26 highway but its a Z51 with the MZ6 trans, therefore lower gear ratios.

The wife and I put on 2435 miles on our '04 Z51 auto last spring on an elevin day road trip and averaged 26 mpg. That included hyway, mountain and city driving. Very comfortable to be in even for the 16.5 hour drive back home the last day.

'98 6 speed. 3.42, stock tire sizes.
stock, 29 hwy and 21-24 around town.
after H/C/I, 29 hwy and 16-22 aound town. (partly because i run out the gears more often now )

Mods were done at 120k miles, now has just under 150k. Super reliable and I would trust it anywhere.

You won't find a better bang for your buck than a C5.

Default c5 with stick

I just got the car last month, and I get around 38 plus in high gear, running around 70 plus, at less than 2000 rpms.

Around town is about 15, as I tend to wind it out past the 1-4 gas economy shift program. That program is a little leisurely for the wild eyed people around me at the stop lights. Not that I care, I like a little higher power band anyway, but it sucks gas pretty easily that way.

Clutch feel is obsoletely stiff , but I guess GM thought that was more macho.

I haven't checked my tire size , but they are probably stock sized. I was meaning to check that today .

My '02 Z is similar, 18 around town and as high as 29.? on the highway.

Or because he got the optional "obsoletely stiff" clutch I was unaware that was offered:

Anyway, it's possible to get that number on the high way with a feather touch and some downhill, but I don't think it can be sustained.

I'm the guy that reported 38 mph

I tried to post an edit to give more info, but it is not showing up.

I am not trying to mis-lead the guy, that is what my instant gas milage display reads out. I haven't checked beyond that yet.

The car is a 2003 convertible , and runs a real nice set of gear ratios, different from some other models. In talking with another 1998 convertible owner, he reported the same type of results. Perhaps we are both wrong,

By the way, I under reported the speed.......

Correct. That's probably what he looked at - the instantaneous MPG shown in the DIC going downhill, and surmised that 38+ is the norm.

Edit: just saw the posters response

I'm the guy that reported 38 mph
Oh, that explains it! We all believe you when you say you were able to hit 38 MPH.

Just playing with you!

My 2003 stock A4 got an honest 31 mpg on a trip from KY to FL. Trip was 99% highway and I took it easy with the throttle. I don't do much city driving, but it sounds like your commute is mostly highway. I am very pleased with the mpg that our Corvettes are capable of.
