The dealership needs to pay the owner for repair. I would not not trust them to fix it. Have it quoted somewhere else. Let them pay the owner. Reduce the price you pay, then you have it fixed after you buy it so you are in charge of the work, not someone else.

The guys at this dealership are idiots.
The OP starts by saying he has already purchased and taken possession of the car with full knowledge of the damage. It's now between him and the dealer. The seller's only involvement at this point is as a witness.
I decided to settle it for the dealership sending me a free touch-up paint kit in Electron Blue. The car is not going to stay perfect because I intend to drive it. Might as well not get too wound up about a mistake and a couple of minor scratches in a place most people will never look anyway. The kid who did it has been given a stern talking to about taking shortcuts. I appreciate all the advice here--except for a couple of comments made by people who clearly have some kind of chip on their shoulder or inferiority complex.

Glad you are happy with the outcome. Also, now that the first battle scar is done, you can drive it with a care-free attitude.

Yep, Jed, there are always a few, no matter how innocuous the question might be. I used this color font in honor of your new car!!
Enjoy it my friend. Nothing like a Z.!!
Are you kidding? You are making them replace it, right?
P.S. Don't go back to that dealer.
There was a Chevy dealership I used only once near my home. And when it was finished from having the wheel alined, It was so filthy and black greased in the 'Shale' colored carpets I said I'm not taking this home. I got some back and forth mishmash, got pissed and took the thing home. It took 3 hours and two arousal cans of carpet cleaner and I wore out a scrub brush cleaning the carpets, And I had to take it to a outside alignment shop to have the damn wheels alined the right way. They hired Tech school grads who know damn little about Corvettes and perhaps a lot about Cavaliers.
I called General motors about this sh&^%y service and they asked if I would mind repeating my situation on tape, I said "Sure!" Told them the whole story about Rothrock Chevrolet, well I'm now sure they taped a lot of customers as now the dealership is closed. When GMC came out of bankruptcy they only kept the dealerships who had a really good customer service record. The dealership I now go to is a lot farther from my home, but they do everything to satisfy the customer. They even have a technician who deals only with customers and the service. They won't let you leave unless your satisfied even if it means they lose some on it.
I think after you leave the dealership and dont say anything about it may fall into youre lap to prove the damage was caused there and not somewhere else. Seems like an attorney would know better to leave with damage without saying something to the manager of the shop

Actually, from what I see here, they kept the ones with the bigest, newest buildings selling the most cars. I used to buy all my Chrysler parts from a small local dealer that gave great service. Second generation family bussiness that really took care of their customers. Too bad, they weren't big enough, the building was old and they didn't sell a lot of new cars. They did more service work than anything else. So they got the franchise pulled. Much the same with GM dealers in the area. Bigger is better. Big corporations don't give a crap about anything but the bottom line. Don't fool yourself.

Even thou you settled for less then the damaged owed I'm glad to see that you will actually be driving it
I hate to see these cars 'garage queen' or 'never driven in rain'
Bought mine with 6.5k miles on it, 3 yrs later 59k of fun driving
and now its getting ECS supercharged
Drive it - Enjoy it - try to ignore the imperfections even thou its hard
I notice you said "the kid that did it has been given a stern talking to." Was this kid not a certified Vette Tech? There is only ONE Chevy/GM dealership in my hometown and they have 2 Vette Techs. I suppose I should count myself lucky.

Exactly, is a car!!! , Your going to drive it and put miles on in anyway and add rock chips to the nose and wheel wells over time, its not a big deal. Really it is not

Just read this and I'm purely and truely amazed with the OP's original question, and at some of the replys. Only a lawyer with a very diminished thought process could not know how how he, or anyone else, should feel in a situation like this. Maybe he should have had the local D.A. help him out. I honestly don't think he'll be smart enough to to handle the ownership of his newly found treasure. I'd hate to see this poor Z in a couple of years.

Here's to actually driving it!! As you obviously can tell,, kinda silly to pay a ton to just let it sit and then take a big dollar hit and "give" someone an almost new car!! Congrats on the find,,and drive the hell out of it and have a ball!!
Well at least they add entertainment value to the thread. By the way, you would think a poster who wanted to run down my intelligence would run a spell checker to make sure he spelled correctly simple words like "truly" and "replies."
