I just tried to fit a spare tire/wheel into my 2001 convertible trunk and it fits. Now if I get a flat that is not repairable because it is in the side wall or bigger than 1/4" I can use a spare tire finally. A 225-50-17 is 26.1" in overall diameter just like the rear tire of a Z06 and the Z06 wheels I have on my convertible. Those driving a non Z06 can find a tire that is the same diameter as their rear tire. I am mounting my 225-50-17 on a Z06 front wheel. While a 225-50-17 tire needs a recommended 6-8" rim I do not think it should be a problem if I drive like it is a space saver spare, slow. This gives me a lot of comfort knowing if i get a flat I have a spare to change to, especially with the vast distances out here in the west.
Can anyone see a potential problem mounting a 225-50-17 Falken ZE-512 or ZE-912 tire on a 17" x 9 1/2" rim assuming I drive very carefully?
Obviously a 295-35-18 will not fit in the convertible trunk but I have put a 295-35-18 on a rear Z06 wheel behind the seat of my Z06. It barely fit but I need a tire/wheel that will fit in the convertible through the trunk not behind the seats.
I am selling an extra Z06 wheel on the parts section for anyone who wants to do this.
OkieBikerDude- 3 choices-- If I get a flat on a rear tire I found that if I use a scissor jack at the front lifting point with a puck that I can lift the whole half of that side of the car. I could also drive on the 2x6 I carry with that flat tire and lift then. It is also not a big deal to carry two scissor jacks, one to lift at the front point and then on the flat position. Out here in Arizona there are vast distances of nothing and no cell phone coverage.
Does anyone know what the overall diameter is of the GTO spare tire?
Don't you have to modify the wheel?
And looking for a GTO space saver as I have been doing on E-Bay I am not finding anything so I thought I would go with the Z06 front wheel idea.
Should a 225-50-17 tire on a 9 1/2" wide be a major worry if I drive VERY slow?

The GTO spare tire/wheel is 17"x4". It requires approx. 65mm (from what I've read) for the ID to mount to the C5. The tire size is T145/70-17". If it gives you peace of mind, go for it. Just be mindful of the GTO spares limitations.
Hotwheels 57 -- that info was very helpful and it seems that the GTO spare is 25" overall while the Z06 tires in the rear are 26.1" which I beleive would mean I would burn out my differential if I used that on the rear. I will not be going the GTO spare route.
Jrose7004 - I bought 2 low scissor jacks, each of which is capable of lifting the whole side of the car. I think I got them at Walmart or AutoZone.
Cessna10 - I do not think AAA will fix a flat on the spot but will tow you to a place that can repair it the proper way which is both a plug and a inside patch. In any case, I can not get cell phone reception in a lot of places in Arizona.
To the rest who suggested a cell phone and AAA card I have that but as I said this is not the East coast and the distances between towns can be 100 or 200 miles WITHOUT cell phone coverage.
I will be going with the 225-50-17 on my extra front Z06 wheel.

There's another possible alternative, but I don't know enough about engineering to know if my idea is valid, so I'm waiting for answers to my post.
Instead of the GTO spare, I've found there's 2010-2012 Camaro OEM spare that's available. It's a 155x70-18 tire on an 18" rim, obviously. The bolt pattern is correct at 5x4.75. Diameter is 26.6", a half inch taller than the OEM 295x35-18 diameter of 26.1". That's a 1.8% difference.
1) Does anyone know if that is safe for the differential and acceptable for both front and back applications?
2) Will this set up need spacers for front or back? How can I tell? I know how to measure for backspacing and offset, but I don't know why it's important... chalk that up to an "internet education".
