Default C5 Shut down, will not start...

Took the car out for the first time this year. The battery seemed to be a little low so I charged it up before leaving. All seemed fine for the first 8 miles running about 68 mph. then it just shut down. I rolled off to the side tried to start it, came right up. started to pull out ,and it quit. Back off the road. now it would not start, battery seemed to be low. no messages showing. Got a ride home bought a new battery, and went back. this took about 3 hours. When I got back I tried the car and it started right up. made a turn for home. Drove about 8 miles again it shut down no messages again. Battery seemed to be low again so I changed it out, put the new one in. Car cranked well but would not start. called for the rollback and took it home.

When at home tried to started it I got a message low battery, still not starting.

Any ideas, open to all ....Thanks for reading.

Are there any codes you can pull for us -

My first thoughts is the VATS system, try cleaning off the pellet on your key and reinserting it in the ignition and repeating -

Second thought is fuel pressure dropping off -

But see if there are any codes this will get us headed in the right direction

Thanks,Matt

Pull the codes as suggested. Check your battery connections and the connections at the starter solenoid since this is where the battery, alternator and starter all come together. measure the battery with a meter when the ignition is off.

As I continue to think about it -

It sounds like you may have a defective/failed alternator, it would be worth pulling it off and have it tested. Replace "IF" defective!

Thanks,Matt

That's what it looks like to me as well. However, wouldn't the new battery start the car, even with a bad alternator?

and you should be getting a charging system fault message.

Its hard to say,,,
what does "battery seemed to be low again" mean is real terms?
if you bought a new battery it should be fine.

I doubt a bad battery OR a bad alternator would shut you down cold and then allow you to immediately start it right back up.

Check your grounds......

It did start with the new battery -

But it sounds like it drained the battery down or at least enough not to fire the coils and or fuel injectors -

I would trace the grounds out from the battery out and make sure they are secure and clean, then trace the positive like stated above especially at the starter solenoid -

Have the alternator checked, this just happened to another member the other day and his alternator was bad, got a new one a bam - sometimes it is just that way - so it is worth the few turns of a wrench and have it soun up on a tester

Let us know any findings you get and or results

Thanks,Matt

It looks like it did not start with the new battery.

You've got a bad connection somewhere. Could be positive or ground. VATS will not tell you low battery. And with a brand new battery, you shouldn't be getting that message either. As others have said, trace out the grounds first. Pull them, open them, clean them. If that doesn't work, go to the positive side and do the same.

If that doesn't work, flame throwers and hand grenades will make you feel better.

I first want to Thank All Of You, for your ideas...after many hours of trying to get the car to repeat anything, I gave in and took it to the dealer. They ran the codes and came up with one..The only code they got was a fail start 18 miles ago. They told me to run it, that all was normal......So I have been driving it, and all seems O K... I think the car was mad at me for putting it up last winter.....

Wish I could pass on some good info . Thanks again !!!
