Just out of curiosity, if I were to take my car to the dealer with this error code, would they be able to fix it? Or am I simply out of luck??

read that repair article. if failures are common with the contacts and relays that's not a super difficult repair.

i wonder how many have been tossed with this problem

Doubt very many. I'm sure if most were the relay, the current repair outfits would be repairing them.
