If you had the choice between getting a 350 bored out to a 383 stroker or 436 for your Z what would you choose and why? Im just curious to see everyones thoughts on this.

You're leaving too many unanswered questions....

How will the car be used?
Is money a factor?
Do you have other supporting mods like a clutch, headers, fuel?

It's obvious everyone will pick the larger engine since it'll produce more power.

There's no replacement for displacement unless you're boosting the engine!

OK ok my bad, well we will go with a just a toy, maybe some track time ie quarter mile passes other than that just the other car we drive for fun; of course all the supporting mods will be used and money is a factor to a point. I wouldnt blow loads of money but i would spend the dollars to get it done right.

As the saying goes - "There is no replacement for displacement"

Go for the bigger cubes

This is true for the most part. How the cubes are gotten will affect the engines operation and capabilities, which depends a lot on intended use. For instance increasing the stroke to gain cubes is great for street use, because it puts the power lower in the rpm range where most of the driving is done, but may not be as good for a racing engine that demands high RPMs. For that instance a big bore with a shorter stroke would be better.

To get 436 out of a LS6 I'm guessing you'll have to increase both bore and stroke(?).

The OP should do a cost analysis between the two options.

Texas Speed 418 or 429 LS3 longblocks start at ~$8k.

Post a link, it might be junk. I'd go with someone with a good reputation.

Here are some engine pics of a fellow member from the C6 section that bought a cheap motor and it immediately failed. You can clearly see how bad the sleeve job was. Complete junk.

If it sounds too good to be true...

EDIT: I bet that $3k price requires a donor block, and only includes the bottom end, in which case you'd still need to get a camshaft, valvetrain, heads, etc. The TSP longblocks already have all this stuff, including a new block.

I just had England Green in Houston build me a new forged motor, (it's a blown 346) but it made more power than expected. It was cheaper than buying some of the "used" motors I've seen for sale on here and I’ve never heard a vette guy that didn't like them either. Might give Jason or Stephen a call 281-464-2800

OK, I'll be devil's advocate:

A 382 is a lot of fun on the street...especially in a light car like a C5Z. Easy to get 500rwhp outta one with great power under the "curve" (my torque curve was pretty flat). You can use your current block (so you know what you're getting) and the install can be done by any competent shop.

500rwhp is plenty on a street tire and you could always spray it down the road if you got bored.

Being in Vegas the elevation is going to hurt your power. I'd go as large as you can afford to. $3k will get you a good clutch and headers, but not an engine.
As to why, I spent a ton of money on my last vette looking for more power. Having the heads redone, different cams, intakes and porting etc. On my current car I went all out with what was available at the time. 5 years later I have no regrets. It's cheaper to do it right the first time.
