If you plan on driving the "Tail of the Dragon" I would strongly recommend doing it mid-week - like mentioned earlier on weekends the Tail is loaded with motorcyclists and some of them will be right on your rear bumper.
when is your group heading down to the Museum ?
thats not really true. Infact I always have the opposite problem with the motorcycles.
We are leaving here Sunday Aug 5 , staying overnight in Bowling Green and visiting museum Monday Aug 6 , hope to take in a plant tour also ,still working out timing for this . From Bowling Green plan on heading for Blue Ridge Parkway . But options still open as have not firmed up route yet . Will be taking the info regarding tail of the dragon to the group so we may incorporate this into our plans . Thanks for details. Vince
This brings up a problem I have. We are taking a cruise up the west coast to Alaska in July. We are going to drive up from AZ to S.F. and I want to take the vert of course but the wife is vetoing that because we can't take enough luggage for a lousy 2 week trip! GRRRR...

My fiance wanted to take a bunch of stuff for our 9 day trip, but I got it down to an amount for both of us that we could fit in the vert and still put the top down. We did wash clothes at the friend we stayed with mid trip, so that helped, but you could do that at a hotel as well. I was able to fit both medium (28 or 30" tall) and small (22" tall) rolling luggage in the trunk and still be able to put the top down. I also crammed a bunch of stuff in all three bins under the trunk floor, and put stuff behind both seats. It's actually fairly amazing how much space there really is in the vert.
The Cherahalla Parkway at the NC end of the tail of the dragon is a lot more fun than the tail itself (and a lot safer since bikers usually stay away from there.)
I agree... The Dragon is fun when the traffic is light, but most of the time you end up behind grandma in a minivan that doesn't break 20mph. Cherahalla Skyway is a blast...over 50 miles long, light traffic and you can definately go fast if you choose too.
I would love to get my Vette out west in the canyons..
Going to Watkins Glen for a track day Saturday! Chesapeake bridge tunnel is great, especially when its on the way to the Outer Banks. But, really, anywhere is good to go in the Corvette.
I'm leaving Sunday 4/22 on a 10 day road trip down the East coast. First stop Ocracoke NC (Outerbanks), then on to Wilmington NC, Myrtle Beach, and Charleston SC. From there down to my daughters place in Bradenton Fl, up to Beverly Hills Fl and finally to Peachtree City Ga. We are visiting friends and family and leaving time for fun elsewhere also!! Open itinerary with no hotels booked yet. Just winging it !! Oh, and did I forget to mention we will be running the Dragons tail and cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway on our way North from Florida. And.... just put on my new JW Motorsports wheels, waxed BLKPASHN and installed an adapter to my IPOD jack to allow me to plug in my phone for some Pandora !!
As far as past cruises, the 2009 caravan to Bowling Green for the 15th anniversary was unbeatable. Great stops along the way, arriving in a 230 car long caravan and seeing thousands of Vettes everywhere in Bowling Green was simply amazing. Cant wait for 2014 !!
Another vote for The Tail of the Dragon, The Cherohala Skyway, and The Blue Ridge Parkway! The Dragon is 318 turns in 11 miles! All of those roads around the Smoky's are incredible driving roads with gorgeous scenery.
We took a trip and stumbled onto a road in the south section of Sequoia National Park, I think it was route 190. It was all turns and some elevation changes. I think it was about 50 miles that looked about like below. It had almost no traffic, side roads, homes/business(in short wide open/deserted ). It was so many turns that my arms got tired. Only once or twice did my wife actually scream.
Best road I have found in quite a while.
The only bad part was that I was in rental car at the time. It was mostly low speeds maybe 35 to 50 mph, but I found out that the car's tires started making noise quicker on right turns than left ones. I also noticed that I used up about half the tread on that trip (a good portion was lost on this road, but the trip was about 5,000 miles)
You haven't lived until you've ridden the Dragon. You can see some of my Dragon videos here--as well as one where I lose control of my Vette and plug it into a drainage ditch. Not a good day, that.
I also agree about the Cherohala Skyway. It is an achingly beautiful stretch of road with amazing scenery.
IMHO the Tail is highly overrated - and dangerous with all the hotshot bikers! The Skyway is fabulous; longer, better road, less traffic, etc. Since you'll be in Bowling Green, head west a bit and check out Land Between the Lakes. Nice twisty road, and you can stop and check out the bison and elk! Lotsa good roads in MO too. Hwy 19 thru Hermann is nice, and Hermann has some great wineries if that's your thing!

One of the great road trips in Missouri. Land between the lakes is a nice drive and good scenery as well. Never been on the tail of the dragon that I know of. I have been around that part of the country many times though.
Another great drive is from Gatlinburg, over the mountain into NC to the Cherokee Indian Reservation, if yo're into that historic sort of thing.
RT 66 IS ALWAYS A GREAT CRUISE. GET A BOOK OR VISIT ON LINE FOR THE GREAT AMERICAN BYWAYS. YOU'LL BE ABLE TO FIND DRIVES ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE PICK WHICH INTERSTATE WE WANT TO TRAVEL WEST ON & THEN PICK SCENIC DRIVES TO JUMP OFF ON AROUND PLACES WE WANT TO SEE. I HAVE POSTED MANY PICTURES ON MY PROFILE

Hot Rod Power Tour by far is the best road trip you will ever take.
This year
Detroit to Arlington. 7 cities in 6 days
Same here!
Last year: Cruised the beach in Florida, drag racing anything and everything in Georgia and Alabama, autocrossing in Nashville, took a lap around Indy, visiting the motor city, and touring the GM proving Grounds.
The problem with the tail of the dragon is all of the cops. I was planning on going there with my 1000RR once but I got so many reports of cops just laying in wait all over the place busting everyone who does even the most remote thing wrong that I didnt think is worth it. I am going to be road tripping mine down US1 from cocoa beach to the keys.
