I had a machanic tell me that the LS1 and the ZO6 are the exact same engine. He said they have the same pistons, crank, heads, cam. He said the only differance was in the timeing. Tell me this aint so !

The new intake was on all 01 and newer cars though so it cant really be considered just an ls6 intake even though thats what everyone calls it.

The oil pump is also better in the LS6 too, right? Also the sodium filled valves.

Basically they are!

As stated above, different heads, cam intake but in my case, I have a 2002 (LS-6) motor and threw out the crappy heads/cam/intake that came with it. So what do I have, an LS-1 or an LS-6?

Better oil pump? IDK but assume it does about the same function and doesn't add any power...

keep the mechanic and buy him a beer

And the LS6 had horrible valve springs-prone to failure.

ask the mechanic what he meant about the timing, other than that he sounds correct. Maybe you misunderstood the timing answer ... I think the oil porting was a little better on the 2002 - 2004 years.

Give the mechanic a chance, he may have been not really trying to go in depth on the subject. And quite frankly he may be really a great technician who knows his stuff and references the service manuals. Just because he doesn't quote the specs off the top of his head, doesn't mean he's not good.
