Default Under hood painted......

I just saw a hood painted underneath to match the body color and then clear coated...it looked great. So what was the purpose of a hood liner anyway? Help deaden engine noise and protection from engine heat? Was it a bad idea/will the top of the hood paint now get damaged from engine heat? Again, it looks great. Opinions please

I'm guessing you might be talking about my post? (Millenium yellow paint, hood light removed, 3 pictures, etc.)

Anyway, based on the consensus and explanations I've heard, and my own experience, the hood liner is only for snuffing out engine fires and was a safety "device" only. I could tell no difference in engine noise or heat after removing my hood liner. Many, many forum members have removed their hood liner and painted under their hoods, sometimes extravagant murals probably costing $1000s of dollars, and have had them that way for years with no paint issues, either below or above the hood. These engines don't produce THAT much heat. And with the Z06's especially you get some air flow through the engine bay with the open screens. The top of my intake and fuel rail covers and my honker air intake are always cool to the touch, even after really long, hard drives in the car. I'm not concerned whatsoever about paint issues.

Just my 2 pennies.

If you find a good, reasonable shop you can have a beautiful paint job under your hood for WAY less than the cost of those engine dress up kits on the market today (nothing wrong with them, but the nice ones cost BIG $$$).

Spot on explanation. If you decide to get the underside painted to look like the exterior, taking the hood insulator off will not cause any problems with the paint.

I removed mine a couple weeks ago. This is raw from the factory. It looks decent as it is now. Its a large canvas under there. I have not decided what to do with it yet.

Your "raw" hood looks great Toque! I'm guessing they maybe skimped on painting the underside when it came to millenium yellow because it costed more to mix/create than the other paints? No idea, but mine looked like ****, it was barely oversprayed under there!

I'm sure you'll come up with something very classy to do with your hood!

Correct .....Hood liners were first designed to keep the automobile hood cool and to protect the car's engine from overheating, (yea I know, unbelievable), hood liners also protected drivers and passengers in the event of an engine fire, If that happened, a set of bolts/plugs underneath the hood were designed to melt quickly, releasing the hood liner onto the source of the fire and smothering it(?), giving passengers extra time to escape the vehicle. During those days, they were made of the dreaded ASBESTOS...I believe federal law stopped that production in 1989, 1990? Now days, it's mostly made of a fire retardant dense foam runner material, some are made of stock pressed fiberglass (not much better than asbestos), I believe the better ones are made of aircraft firewall material.

I don’t use a hood liner, my under-hood is painted also. I like the painted version better...it's been painted satin black for a couple of years now, with no problems. I have added a few "useless" decals...
