So a little help from the forum. I got to thinking the other day that my 2000 coupe is 12 years old, what should I start to think about replacing?
Shocks? hoses? brake lines?
I say change your engine oil. It should be due about now.
Good question. I have a 2000 as well, so this is going to be a good thread.
I just changed my diff fluid and trans fluid. The coolant is next....and power steering fluid? I want to get the brakes bled and...that's about it.
Every two years I do the clutch fluid as I only drive it every 6 months.
You have a good question about the shocks, I've wondered that as well even though the car sticks to the road really well and doesn't bounce or leak fluid, but are they worn? I don't know.
Mine's a 99, bought it 2 years ago. Last year did cooling system flush, new serpentine belt, new hoses, new thermostat, brake system flush, clutch fluid change (regularly using "Ranger" method), power steering fluid change, new plugs, new air filter (stock).
This year, installed Blackwing, new battery, new shocks (planned), new tires (planned).

I have a 2000 as well. I have just over 100k miles on the car. I recently, with the help of another forum member, replaced my clutch, flywheel, master and slave clutch cyclinders, and added a remote bleeder.
While do this we tested my shocks, which were still functioning normally. We did replace the busings on the rear sway bar, and changed out the diff fluid.
Make sure you have all new fluids in the car. Inculding the tranny.
I recently flushed all of my fluids, replaced springs, shocks, sways, endlinks, tie rod ends, water pump, tensioner & idler pulley, and power steering pump and pulley.
I also have a 2000. All these things are great ideas, unfortunately that means I have some work to do this summer
One other thing I was thinking was the sway bar end links. I know mine are the original plastic ones and the rubber boots are completely gone. Definitely putting on the metal replacements soon.
how many miles are are on your car? that would be the biggest factor in figure out what really needs to be replaced
I have a 99,with only 24,000 miles on it, but I did all the fluids (every fluid) last summer, not many miles on the car but I dont like the thought of old fluids sitting in there for a long period of time..
Great thread. I just bought a 2000 coupe and it runs great but has 173,000 miles (mostly highway) on it. It even has the original clutch and no slippage. I was curious about the suspension lifetime as well. It still handles tight but hell, that's a lot of miles. Something will eventually give.
I absolutely love this forum. It has a lot of great information and helpful members.
Another 2000 here. In the past 2 years since I've bought it I've changed the following (along with engine oil, of course).
- New tires (previous set was original Goodyears)
- Coolant
- Clutch fluid (Ranger method)
- Brake fluid
- Rear Diff
- Tranny fluid comes this fall (it's a manual)
At only 12,500 miles on the car, I won't need to worry about a lot of "wear" items, like clutch or brakes, for a while. I check all the belts and hoses every spring. I think the big thing for any 12 year old car is fluids.
Only the things that are broken, otherwise just do scheduled maintenance.
And in between you add mods and cosmetic improvements. I was lucky in that my 2000's original owner is just as **** as I am about proper maintenance and changed out all of the fluids regularly. The Carfax report reads like a Vette owner's wet dream.

Oh the oil, why didn't I think of that? Thanks for the smile on my face this morning.
Thanks for all the good input, sounds like I am pretty much on course. Probably should do the coolant this year. Shocks are the ones that I am mostly thinking about. They are one of those things that give up so slowly its hard to notice. Do they slowly wear out or as long as they are not leaking they are ok?
