I did into the 170's with a ZR1 on Road America and VIR. but wont do it again with out a roll cage and other race safty items.
HA! I did the same 165mph-173mph on the back straight of Monticello in a ZR1 on multiple laps. You don't think about it too much when you're doing it, but when you're done...I was like.... . You don't even wanna think about the consequences at that speed of losing a rotor approaching the esses or a tire...or anything for that matter. You're trusting the machine 100% at that point...lol.
Can't say enough about those carbon brakes though...160+ downhill approach to the esses at Monticello...you need every bit of those brakes and they do it well.
I just found this video on an old harddrive. This was a topspeed-run of a stock 2002 Corvette Coupe with the targa top removed...! Highest speed was 184mph on the AUTOBAHN!
I'm surprised at the top end of these cars. I mean, doing 180 or more is actually an incredible feat, but with the gearing, slick body, and the power being produced, I'd think there would be more in the 200 mph range than there are.
I mean, years ago I pushed a brick of a C2 to 190 mph and they are bricks compared to a C5 or C6. I was literally at the limits, as I was revving about 7200 at that point and I just didn't have enough gears to go faster. Just as well I couldn't, really.
My really big problem was keeping it on the ground at that speed. There were many times I really felt like climbing over the windscreen and out on the hood to push the nose back down. That would only make sense to you if you ever drag raced a bike.
Here are a couple of the Kerbeck toys for tots videos.
According to the HUD in a bone stock 03 Z06 I was driving I had it up to 165. I forget what RPM and gear, it was years ago on a public highway and I had to slow it down. Still had more in it though.
My current Z06 should definitely break the 200mph barrier, dare I try it, since it has the M12 and a 2.73 rear. With a 625whp turbocharged setup. I am really anxious/nervous to try it. There are no open enough roads where I am in NY.
Drive that Z06 to AZ and we'll go out in the desert with a group of guys and cell phones. Plenty of wide open flat straight road. It will be you solo on a stretch of road 2-3 miles long and you can open it up. To just go without proper communication is putting others at risk. This way you will be aware that the road is clear of other cars including the Highway Patrol. Just you and a rattlesnake.

This plan if you will to find a place to open up your Corvette was originally not my idea. A Phoenix police officer is the one who suggested it. It also allows for inspection of the road for any debris. I can not imagine hitting anything going over 100 mph would be in your best interest.
