Well my search for my first Vette continues. I missed out on a 1995 M6 and 1996 LT4 M6 in the last two months but now I am seeing C5 prices drop a little. I am going to forgo the C4 and have eyes on a 1998 Triple Black C5 with 114K on it. Dealer wants $10,995. I originally wanted a manual but I might deal with an automatic if I can get it for $9995. This obviously is after it checks out and I test it and get it inspected.
I have a few questions though. Should I assume that the transmission will need rebuilt or do the A4's hold up over time and miles? My last question is, I know that manual vs auto is a personal preference etc.. but will the A4 be decent as far as performance? I owned a 94Z28 M6 and then a 2000 Z28 M6 prior to buying a house and getting married over the last two years. If this one falls through then I'll probably pay off my 07 Avalanche and look for a 2005 0r 2006 next summer. Any opinions are appreciated.
I would try to find a reputable Corvette shop to pay to check it out. We typically don't drive Corvettes as easy as some other cars. Pay a little now and have it checked out if you are pretty sure that is the car you want to own.

Like you said, the choice of an A4 of six speed is your choice. However, I have had two 6-speed C5s and now own an A4. I do not have any complaints about my A4 - I have found it nice to be able to just put it in gear and drive - especially when it comes to dealing with stop and go traffic. If you do decide to go with the A4, I would certainly look for one with the performance rear axle in the car. The factory numbers indicate that the manual tranny cars are quicker, but that assumes a lot about the driver too.
I would agree with having an experienced technician check the car over very carefully. IMO, if it has been well maintained, the A4 should still give you a lot of miles before needing a repair.
