Default Steering wheel moan?

2003 Z06 13k miles. At slow speeds like maneuvering around a parking lot my steering wheel makes like a moaning sound. It's sounds like its in the wheel somewhere between the dash and the wheel. Don't notice it once I'm making a little more noise, but in the quiet of a parking lot or slow turns in the neighborhood it's quite annoying. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem with my '03 Z06 with 27k miles. I'm curious to see what it might be as well. Subscribing.

Ah yes, I think it sounds like the whine of a baby. The source of the noise is simply the wheel rubbing on the column and the Vette isn't the only vehicle to have this problem, older Toyotas were fairly common for this too.

Every time I clean the car up I just use a little "dressing" in between the those two surfaces and it clears it right up. I like 303 Aerospace Protectant for my interior dressing for the nice low sheen matte look, but you could use anything really (Armor all, tire shine, whatever). All you are doing is lubricating the surfaces so they slide quietly together vs. squeaking as they rub.

Works for me

I sprayed WD40 onto the bushings at the firewall from the engine bay side and my squeak went away.

Been there: actually I found mine and fixed it. I always thought in was coming from inside the car around the column. It really is outside down at the fire wall and under the brake booster. you can spray WD40 or some kind of lubricate around the bushings and might just stop your problems. Good luck and hope you get it to stop. I did finally.

Power Steering pump is failing.

First change the power steering fluid.

if that goes not do it, time to replace the pump.

This problem comes back every now and then. Just like onspeed and Ghost Vette said, its the bearing on the firewall. Spray it down and the sound goes away.

Sprayed the bearings under the brake booster..absolutely no effect at all on the noise. Then I sprayed some armor-all and wd-40 between the wheel and the column. Seems a tad quieter, but definitely not eliminated. We'll see.

Maybe try spraying some at the firewall from the cabin side?

Recently bought an '04 with 17K miles on it and after a few weeks of the car, I noticed this backing into my garage yesterday. I had originally thought it was the brakes squeaking, but sat in park and turned the steering wheel only to hear the same squeak. Sounded like power steering unit to me, very faint in the cabin. I'll get my wife to turn the wheel while I lift the hood and listen to see if I can pinpoint the source more. And I'll give the WD-40 trick a try.

Me too, & it's clearly at the wheel, even with my bad hearing I can tell that.

I sprayed a little lube & it got a little better, will spray some more/different lube.
