Default Totaled or not!?

So....bad string of luck with the Corvette. Drove it to Key West this weekend and got a flat tire on the way home. So i had to leave it in a McDonald's parking lot overnight, went back this morning and pulled the wheel off and had the tire changed. Leaving the parking lot a Dump Truck decided to hit me... drove it 50 miles home after that...so any experience with how much it takes to total out a 2000? It looks like it for sure needs a new front bumper, left fender, left door, left quarter panel...not sure how much damage if any was done structurally. I would be surprised if it was much as the collision only happened at about 5 mph. I tried to attach an image on her but couldn't figure out how!!

P.S....i've only had this car about a month

Pics would be nice but as C5's age, they're more easily totalled by insurace companies.

Most likely the insurance company will total it out! It doesnt take much to total out a Vette these days and with the amount of damage you listed I would not be surprise if they due.

That's a bummer man... At what speeds were you able to drive it home 50 miles after the accident? Did you notice any problems in steering?

Good luck....

I drove it home on the highway doing between 50 and 60. Probably could have went faster but wanted to play it safe just incase. It pulled to the right if i let go of the wheel. The steering wheel is a little off center and the left suspension seems to be riding high.

Well, yea, if it's got suspension and steering problems, this may be a total, but still, you'll never know until you or someone gets under there and see what the damage is, that way, if it's totaled, you'll make a decision of whether it's worth buying back and having it fixed. Good luck...

I'm assuming the estimate will be done using new parts wherever i end up taking it. All the body parts/paint plus whatever the problem may be with the front suspension... i think it's going to be right on the border of totaled or not.

finding new body parts will be problematic. Also, it would almost guarantee a enough damage to totol it.

Hmmm.....typically an insurance company will not total unless the damages equal 75% of the total value of the car. There certainly may be some back and forth since its a Vette but I would be prepared to consider options.

If they total it out...it's time to start looking for another one obviously

I just recently got in a wreck where I was t-boned with a lot of damage so here's my experience.

This is what needed to be done:

New door
New rear quarter
New rocker
Fix front fender
Fix rear bumper
New rear knuckle
Repaint all above and blend into all adjacent panels

Ended up running about $6300. So you may be ok

Unless you have a special policy your insurance will write for recon/ LKQ parts.

I've never understood the thoughts of not using "used body parts?" If you get used fenders, hoods, doors, NO damage, and the only thing wrong with them is YOUR paint color, what's the problem? I know guys, me included, who have built their engines, suspension, gears, from USED parts bought right here off the forum, so my thought is, if I buy a used LS6 intake for my engine, used heads, used headers, and used torsion bars/end links, am I putting myself, and pocket at more risk having those used parts as opposed to a used fender/door/hood?

This is not directed to the OP, it is a question I have. Personally, I have NO intention of selling my C5, it's here until I die, now, that being said, I would have no problem with used fenders/doors/hoods, with NO damage, painted to my liking.

I hope you guys understand what I'm saying, we put used parts into our suspensions, into our engines, gears, like there's nothing to it, but complain about used body parts?

I thought this was a good thread to bring up these thoughts. I dunno...

Good luck OP....

My concern with something like this is branding of the title if someone does a search on the VIN and sees that this car was wrecked, it puts a lower value on the car. You can fix the car , but how do you deal with a branded title and why should you have to take that loss when the accident wasn't your fault ? Years ago many cars were wrecked and fixed and nobody ever knew but today body shops and insurance companies record everything.

If you aren't at fault for a loss you can file diminishment of value claim with the at fault person's carrier.
