Default One more question.

Hello;
Am about to re-install my intake manifold on my LS1. I have new knock sensors and a new harness. I did find a small amount of oil in the knock sensor wells. Is this normal? I wiped out all that I could. Should ai be concerned about this?
Thanks, Jake

It is normal for oil to be all over everything in the intake. Do a catch can like suggested to stop it from building up again.

No it isn't normal. Not to say it isn't common, but the only way you can get oil up there is if it enters through the breathing tubes. As mentioned above, get a catch can. (or you could just do an engine rebuild new bore, rings and pistons ought to take care of the oil!)

There is a round seal that presses into the bottom of the tubes in the valley pan and seals around the block where the knock sensors screw in. Over time these seals will dry out and leak a little oil. You can pull the valley cover off and replace these seals. I've never seen much oil in the tubes but I think its normal for a little to creep in.

Yes it is normal because it is an inherent flaw in the design of a pcv system. In a perfect world oil would not be all over everything. But it is normal for it to be there. The catch can will stop oil from getting in there. It is best to clean the intake, intake runners on the heads, the TB, and everything you can before installing one. Just installing one will not get whats already there out.

Thanks for the quick reply. It was a very small amount in each well. I cleaned it up. The valley pan was totally dry and free of oil when I removed the intake. Only found a little dust and dirt.
Thank again..Jake

Ok, as I said, maybe not uncommon, but, not 'normal'. I've had my intake off half a dozen times in the past month, and I have to say then, Mine must be abnormal. In fact, it was off at 5pm this evening for a oil pressure sender R&R, still dry... (and I do not have a catch can). I do agree with ya, in an ideal world...
