Default Odometer Reading versus New Engine

How does this work? Replacing my LS1 engine with 150,000 good miles with a used LS6 with 20,000 miles.

How does this impact the odometer reading; can it be reset, etc.?

It is a Federal offense to change the mileage.

OP, as you now know, there is NO resetting the odometer. Period. Just like you wouldn't reset the odometer after getting new tires, or changing the oil, or installing a new battery, or......

My lawn tractor has an 'hours usage' gage....you could mount one to the side of your engine and record the time in service...works off of vibration.

The car still has 150K miles on it, but this is good advice.

Just look at the mileage as a badge of honor. Years ago you only got about 60k miles out of an engine until they were burning oil. It is illegal to change the mileage reading and most of all dis-honest. Just document the mileage of the car when the engine was changed and the mileage of the new engine.

I'm sure everyone realizes I was not suggesting doing some illegal or unethical. This was a legitimate question from a guy who truly didn't know the practice/procedure.

I will definitely follow the advice of the best practice that some of you recommended.

For others, I'm sorry for displaying my ignorance in public - I thought this forum was a safe place to do so.

It is a safe place but sometimes you have to have your big boy pants on. This place allows massive amounts of ignorance but some people still abuse the priviledge.

I have a brand new Ls1complete engine and Z06 trans in my 99 FRC. The car has 52K on it, engine and trans now have less than 3K. Have all documents from the dealer (Libertyville Chev.) and a factory warranty. It's like I have a brand new 99 Corvette.

Just curious...what happened to the engine to replace it a 52K ? The ls engines are just getting broke in about that mileage.

Well that is a long story. I thought I was the 2nd owner of the car. Before I bought it from Exotic Car's,I ran the vin. Tracked it down to Raymond Chev. Went to the dealer they gave me all reciets for work done on the car since new. They gave my name to the orginal owner he called me. Confirmed everything and bought the car from the Exotic dealer. Called the orginal owner again asked him when he put long tube hedders on. He said he did not. Did more checking found out Exoctic Cars bought it at auction 1 week before I bought it and Raymond Chev took it to auction. Went back to Raymond and they said they did sell the car to a kid he had it for 2 month's brought it back since insurance was too high. He put the long tubes on it and took off the cats. Raymond took it to auction since it was now modded. I year everything is fine except when I ran it at a high speed autocross and started to throw a rod.
Took the car to Libertyville Chev to check it out, They pulled the engine and found it was a used iron truck block that was painted silver and hacked cut and forced all the Vett stuff on. And I did throw a rod.
The orginal owner had the Z06 Trans, shifter flywheel etc installed right before he traded in on a new sedan at Raymond. That is one of the reasons I bought the car since it had a 3 year warranty on the trans.
So now I have a new complete LS1 engine and Z06 trans.
Raymond did not know about the truck engine and Exoctic Cars did not either. The kid that had the car for a couple of months did and pulled a fast one.
I got stuck in the middle but the car is great, have added Corsa Exhaust, C6 18" x 19" wheels, Redline Interior upgrades Apresia Mud Flares and have taken 4 1st Place in car shows.
