Normal occurrence. Seems to happen to me on a cold start and I start doing a lot of turns and elevation changes (like a parking garage)

If you start the car and immediately drive and turn the steering wheel, the message comes up momentarily, as it is designed to.

start your car, let it warm up for 60 sec then drive straight for 25 feet or so. and your good to go.

Parking on an any incline is not a good idea.

All covered in the owner's manual. The messages you saw are normal. Here's an excerpt from the owner's manual:

[B][ACT HNDLG - WARMING UP: When you first start
your vehicle (especially during cold winter weather), and
begin to drive away (up to 6 mph (10 km/h)), the
message ACT HNDLG - WARMING UP may be
displayed in the DIC, the instrument panel cluster light
will be on, and a chime will sound. This is normal.
You can acknowledge this message by pressing the
RESET button. The Active Handling System
performance is affected until the next message WARM
UP COMPLETE is displayed in the DIC.
During hot or cold temperature conditions, this message
may be displayed in the DIC after exceeding 12 mph
(20 km/h) for 30 seconds. The Active Handling System is
off until the WARM UP COMPLETE message is
displayed.

WARM UP COMPLETE: If you receive this message
and hear a chime, the system has completed the
functional check of the Active Handling System./B]

Thanks for this post guys!!!! I am on my second '99 coupe and both have been amazingly reliable and faultless cars. However, I have been a little worried about the EBCM issue (and other possible issues with parts that begin to be discontinued) and got the same display on my DIC the other day when leaving school and it seemed to be displayed for an inordinately long time. Had me quite nervous that issues might be about to start.

This post explains it perfectly as it fits that day's situation to a tee!! Leaving school; it was quite hot that day, I have to make a wide U-turn leaving my parking spot (I back in) to the exit from parking lot, and pulled out onto wet, brand new pavement.

1.Car was not running long from start-up to pull-away (wanted to get A/C spinning and cooling ASAP).

2. Did not drive even five feet before turning wheels in a sustained turn.

3. Students who admire my car were watching, so I accelerated firmly (medium, not crazy) once in a straight line so they could enjoy the sound. Not even close to chirping a tire!

Seems I met every condition needed to wake up the EBCM and make it think that it might be needed to moderate things shortly!!

Good EBCM!!!!! Goood Boy!!!!!!!

DSTURBD

Edit: AND....Before you ask.....Yes, I talk to inanimate objects all of the time! In fact, I find that they are usually much better and more responsive listeners than most people!!

Thanks for the replies.

I had run the car for half an hour then parked for an hour before restarting. The message came and went.

In 2 years with the car its the first time I'd seen it.

My display has produced "Active handling warming up" every day for two weeks! it stays on and the traction light stays on. I have noticed a reduction in power when I "get on it" Ive read all the threads and tried to research the problem and they all say it goes away. Mine has not....what gives?

Have you had any work done on the car lately? (Alignment, steering component replacement, etc)

Might be something to do with the SWPS (Steering Wheel Position Sensor)

Even though this is a very old thread we are here to help you out. We need some more infomation. Please pull the codes and let us know what you have. If you don't know how to pull codes, here is a video on how to do just that.

Hopefully OP has had some alignment work done recently. If not, time for a new steering sensor....
If you do need a new sensor, here's hoping even more that you have an '01-'04 model, and NOT the '97-'00 model. Best of luck.......
