I pretty much do what these guys do.
This was the first year I went to allot of shows. I found out what kind of classes they have in the show are very important as it's harder for us C5 guys to compete with older Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, etc.
As for competing against the "clubs". Yeah, that part sux. I dislike getting beat by cars that definitely do not deserve a trophy but won because all their friends voted for them. But when I do win, it's a great feeling
Your points are pretty much dead on. We have a local Corvette club that pretty much swarms every show in the area and surprise, they are the same owners who are holding the trophies and plaques at the end of each show. I guess there is strength in numbers.
As to mixed or classic car shows, the C5 is just not classic enough to compete. Similar to Corvette only shows, the classic guys vote for the other classic guys and a late model Corvette that starts with a "2" in the model year is usually considered an also-ran. I also see a lot more street-tuned Mustangs and Camaros than I do Corvettes in the mixed shows. I'm sure the affordability factor needs to be weighed in, however the C5 Corvette is sort of stuck in no-man's land in many shows.

If I do them at all I usually do it for the charities that are supported. I never expect to win so I don't go crazy cleaning....still if I do a complete detail usually about 3-4 hrs, then maybe a detail spray wipe upon arrival and thats it - - off to enjoy the show...seldom touch it again....
At times depending on how much I've driven since last detail, I may only detail spray wipe her down....
