When is it enough

As some1 said in the c6 section "car shows are good for 1 thing-premium parking for when you wanna go see a car show"...
My home town has 600 people kinda of a drag
Actually, the first part of my statement is completely false but I heard many times about the nose mask. Have fun. Your car looks great

But seriously, when I competed, it would take me about two hours to wash, wax, and detail - mostly the wheels. I would bring a supply box to the show that included things like Windex, Fantastic spray for bug removal, a spray bottle of water, extra wax (just in case,) and two sets of rags - one for dirty and one for clean.
Then during the six to eight hour visit, along with enjoying the cars, food and music at the show, I'd do further refreshing. Not to the extent that I was using a q-tip on the badges - just enough to clean up anything that I acquired on the way to the show.
But I am amused by the attendants who spend the entire time detailing. Every time I'd return to my car, there they'd be, detailing ... detailing ... detailing ...

This may also be my last season because after participating in 4-5 shows within a 100 mile radius, I'm seeing the same cars, the same clubs and the same politics. My first show resulted in a guy next to me crying to the judges that my car should be in the modified class vs. stock class. So much for meeting new Corvette owners and making friends...
Next season, I may just pick out my favorite show (location) and go with that as my annual contribution. Since I usually drive more than 25+ miles to get to each show, I pretty much plan on re-detailing the car upon arrival. Although it is 90% washed/polished/waxed, etc., it's the forgotten areas that the judges get **** about. One judge asked me to open my glove box and then dinged me points because I had my iPod connected to my DD head unit. My response was that it belongs there. He told me I should have removed the iPod and then stuck the cord up and back out of sight. I replied that it was out of sight inside the glove box. Sorry, at that point I was just enjoying a good argument.

I never expect to win because there are just way too many great looking and tastefully modified Corvettes around here. Plus, it's simply a numbers game when it comes to club participation. Upon arrival, I will clean off the road grime or other dirt I picked up on the way to the show and then pack up the supplies and enjoy the show and hopefully meet some new friends. I am not the guy who is buffing, waxing, vacuuming, etc. during the entire show.
I modifed my C5 to my taste and and enjoyment. Although I haven't won any trophies, I have enjoyed many compliments and good discussions with other Corvette owners. I've heard the word "classy" and "perfect" on more than one occassion and I have had guys (and gals) approach me after the show scratching their head surprised I didn't win. (Damn iPod!)
I also feel good that I have probably provided more advice on mods, vendors, process, etc. than I have received based on the work I've performed on my car. I am also amazed at how many owners have no idea of Corvette Forum and the products offered by the supporting vendors. I had one guy take about 10 pictures of my DD console/NAV system. At this point, I'm with Toque in that I enjoy a good cruise vs. another round of detailing. I keep my car clean because I enjoy it clean and while at shows, I would rather be looking at other cars and talking with other owners than picking out every grain of sand out of my engine bay.

I pretty much do what these guys do. This was the first year I went to allot of shows. I found out what kind of classes they have in the show are very important as it's harder for us C5 guys to compete with older Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, etc.
As for competing against the "clubs". Yeah, that part sux. I dislike getting beat by cars that definitely do not deserve a trophy but won because all their friends voted for them. But when I do win, it's a great feeling

I attend just one show a year. Spectators don't vote- thus no nepotism- and the sponsoring club's cars are not in the judging- again, no favoritism. Works for me.
