Default Thermostat replacement

The shop manual says that the cooling system needs to be drained when replacing the thermostat. Is that true? I am guessing that DexCool is expensive.

I am thinking about a 178 degree thermo and an adjustable fan controller. The mall lists these parts for 1997 - 2001. Is the 2002 the same part?

It can be done just pulling the ts, it will loose 1+ gal but can be cought in an oil drain pan and put back in. Or you could just drain it in the pan, it's not a very big deal and clean up is minimal either way. Ric

Havoline Extended Life is Dexcool - widely available - Pep Boys, Walmart, etc. - costs about six or seven bucks a gallon. Other vendors also make Dexcool - look for "Dexcool" on the label, but the Havoline Extended life is the original and what GM uses at the plants.
