I have a 2001 Corvette which I bought with low miles 6,000 klm (3,600 miles) early 2002. Car has been well maintained and pampered. I have spent a fortune on electrical problems and such. A couple of months ago whilst out for a drive the engine started acting up then it just stopped. Ultimately I was told that they couldn't repair the engine and would have to put in a new one. The engine had just clocked over 80,000 klm (48,000 miles). I have been told that the 5.7 litre motors should get at least 200,000 klm, if taken care of.
Has anyone had any similar problems with their 2001 Corvette?
Welcome to the forum. You're going to have to give a bit more specific information on what your actual issues were. It helps also to fill in where you're located, as you may be close to someone who can actually help you.
Lastly, I'd advise you post this in the Tech section. There have been many problems presented and resolved there.
To answer your question, I have a 2001 Coupe and have clocked over 120,000 miles with no engine problems, and several "minor" electrical problems that I've been able to resolve with the help of the tech section and my own tools and hands.
Good luck, and don't get discouraged by the rebellious folk here. You'll not find a more reliable group of people than here on the forum, but it does in many cases require a thick skin.

Good advice above - what specifically was the reason the shop told you the engine can't be repaired? While I'm sure some cars have had early failure of major components, the LS1 engine is pretty stout and does seem to be reliable over a long period.
Manual or Auto ?
What were the symptoms that made you bring it in to the shop ?
Did you drive it there ?
One owner from 3.6k to 48k miles and well maintained and pampered = just about zero chance that the engine is blown.
You would have to drive into deep standing water (and hydrolock it) or brake a mainbelt and drive it overheated for a distance or ignore a low oil pressure warning on the DIC or have a leaking battery burn through the harness (which would cause all kinds of trouble but not likely a blow engine), none of which adds up to the description of how it was maintained/used.
Welcome to the forum, and you should post this over in the Tech forum. Our motors can almost last forever, someone is really feeding you a line of s**t.
