I hope I don't create a problem here, but in New Jersey a front plate is required. So many Vettes run without a front plate here, including myself. Many other types of vehicles too. Thirteen years for me and never been stopped for it either, it doesn't seem to be a big issue in this state. I know people who've even gone thru state inspection without it and not had a problem.
This.
I'm in NY and have had no plate for 7yrs. The only time I got a ticket for it was because I was caught in an inspection stop and they decided to let 2 other cars go without it while they had me pulled to the side. Otherwise, you will rarely, if ever, get pulled over for just a front plate. Cops will tell you 99.99% of the time it was in addition to something else (ie speeding)
I've been pulled over five times for not having a front plate, each time by the same cop. The first four were in my '03 Monte Carlo and the last in my Corvette.
The last time he gave me a warning ticket.
Now I carry my spare plate, sufficiently dirtied up to make it look like it's been recently mounted, along with the mounting bracket.
"I'm sorry officer. I was at a car show yesterday and I completely forgot to put the plate back on. I have it in the back, here let me show you."

As a follow up to my original post. I picked up a clear cover on ebay and sported it until the car was in a couple parades. When I spiffed it up for the parades I put the original matching cover plate blank on it, and have never looked back. An acquaintance is a State LEO, and pretty much said that the plate issue alone isn't enough to get you pulled over unless you're being a total *** hat, or doing something else you shouldn't be doing and it WILL get added to your tab. Though he also added that it is a violation and don't cry foul if you get stopped for it.
I am heading to Kansas for 10 months and they don't require front plates, so I'm going with the victimless crime spree for the time being.

I was doing the speed limit and not breaking any laws all five times I was pulled over. Each time I was on my way through El Paso coming home from Arizona. The guy sits at the inspection station just waiting for someone to pull over. The last time he was actually on the west-bound side of the freeway and turned around to come after me.

As i said before, hes looking for something else. That interstate is a drug highway, maybe he remembers your car as passing through there often and thinks your up to something.

I've been through five times over the course of eight years so it couldn't be frequency, and I have handicap plates so I couldn't imagine what he would be looking for from a disabled person. This is especially true for the last time he pulled me over as he was traveling in the opposite direction and the speed limit there is 80 mph. I haven't even had a ticket since I was in my early 20's so there's nothing at all on my record. I think he's just an a$$hole who enjoys screwing with people.
