If he doesn't like it he shouldn't have bought a used part from a private party that doesn't carry some sort of warranty.

My last C5 had the 12 disc changer and while it worked very well for the first year or two, as it got older (I used it constantly) it started to get a little cranky.
Often after removing the disc cartridge to change out my discs, I would get the Err message upon re-inserting it. I would have to re-insert it a few times, checking it each time for proper operation. Finally, it would "take" and work just fine until the next time that it was removed.
It was an annoying, but not insurmountable, problem. I wouldn't be surprised if he is having the same problem. Have him cycle the cartridge in and out a few times and see if it works.
If not......oh well, you tried.
