MGW isn't ideal for 4 or 5 based on my personal experience with it. I like the thing, but even if my girlfriend could drive a manual she'd hardly be able to muscle this thing into reverse.
Reverse is always hard depending where things are in the tranny. Just move the car slightly in any forward gear and go directly to reverse and it'll go right in.
Aside from the custom shifters you're talking about ( I have a B&M ) try changing your oil in the gearbox. I was amazed how dirty mine looked and I swear it got smoother when I put new fluid in. Synthetic of course.
If you really want a smooth shifting z get a 2008 or newer. I drove my brothers and was amazed how improved the tranny was.

You don't even have to do that. Blip the throttle with the transmission in neutral and the clutch out, then you can engage reverse. You just need to get the input shaft moved so the gear teeth can mesh with the idler.
Love my rsd. Very smooth not really knotchy feeling. Easy install. Occasionally reverse is a bugger but the big Hurst shifter ball may be the culprit. Also look at the anti venom mod once you choose your shifter.
I currently have an 03 Z with ... and a Hurst Shifter of which I am very unimpressed with... let me tell you what I dont like about the Hurst;
1. Sometimes it will not go into gear unless I let out the clutch a bit.
2. Very Notchy .
3. Has a lot of road noise vibration.
4. Stiff shifts.
5. I missed 3rd on a couple occasions and at other times notice some gears hard to find.
6. Reverse takes an arm to engage
What do you guys think?
I wanted to chime in on this because I really like the Hurst. This is probably because I have gotten use to it. There is definitely a short learning curve on using it effectively.
The use of the Hurst can be described this way...and I had to figure this out after I first got my car. When standing by itself, you can go straight up and down for 3rd and 4th. If you want first or second, you apply some pressure to the left and then move to the gear. Same for 5 and 6 except applying a some pressure to the right. Once I figured this out, it made the shifting much much easier and enjoyable.
It's actually funny because I have used the Hurst for so long (about 7 years), normal stick shifts in all other cars feel very loose to me and the excursion between gears feels like a mile.
Sorry didn't mean to derail this thread, just wanted to add my 2 cents on the shifter and hope the OP finds an alternate shifter he likes.
All Awesome points I will try your style Z06ster. SO far after removing a couple springs it is not too bad. I dont think the Textralia clutch helps matters either.
I installed the TPS 427x in my Z16 two years ago and have been very happy. The stock shifter seemed so loose and sloppy. I drove a car with the Hurst and thought it was too stiff for my taste. This is a shortened C6 ZO6 shifter with the classic white ball. TPS is a fourm vendor, this photo is my own car.

About $150 with the ****. My Z16 and I think all C5 ZO6's use metal instead of rubber at the shifter box mount. So you shouldn't need the bushing upgrade kit.
I can't speak to the aftermarket shifters, I just know that my C6 shifter is a whole lot better than the set of boat oars it replaced. Spices up the interior a little too since everything is black on black on black.
It sounds as though some on here don't know that all 4,5, or 6 speed transmissions are centered on 3rd and 4th gear when in neutral. The reason is obvious because when shifting from 2nd to 3rd you don't have to think you just push forward and it automatically goes to 3rd instead of back into 1st which could cause an over rev of the engine. The same is true when going from 3rd to 4th so you don't accidentally go back to 2nd gear.
When downshifting from 5th to 4th this is also true. No real pressure is required leftward. Just pulling backward without actually directing toward 6th will get you into 4th.
This is true regardless of what shifter you choose to install because its designed into the tranny. Just sayin

Makes perfect sense. I just realligned my shifter off of the third gear position. I saw a little improvement but still not what I am looking for in a shifter. I like how that C6 Shifter and RSD shifter, effortlessly glide through the gears.
You guys correct me if I am wrong, but the throw of the shifter is only shorter because the handle is shorter. For the transmission to be engaged the lower portion inside the tranny still has to travel the same distance. The throw just seems shorter because the handle is shorter and thus doesn't travel as far. The shifting mechanisms which fit into the tranny still travel the same distance with each shift.
