My Son's 02 Z06 is having the pull the key, wait 10 seconds and then the dreaded column lock, can't move the car more than two feet and it dies.
Dealer did the recall 1st time, second mechanic removed the plate completely and messed up the "Tune" flashing the computer to stock ($1000), cost another $500 to have the tune put back 2nd time and now it has happened for the 3rd time. What can I advise him to do? Three times seems like something has been missed...
Sorry if this is a rehash, I don't believe I have seen 3 times, is it possible for this to happen over and over?

Agree with OP. .get the Corvettes of Houston Column Lock Bypass. You can also tune it out with HPTuners if you have it. "Column Lock Not Fitted" is the setting.
I had an 02 C5 and had the recall fix twice. When I traded the car, months later the new owner called me and asked what that problem was...I told him. Chevy really needs to fix this problem and it certainly looks like a potential class action law suit.
I installed the LMC5 a couple weeks ago and when I went to move the car the 2 mph fuel cutoff kept stopping the car. I called Rick at Compliance parts and told him of the problem and he said that a few had this problem and said that he would send me a new model that has another wire on it that would eliminate this problem. That was over a week ago , I think it got lost in the mail . Waiting to hear from Rick for a tracking number but will let you know if this fixes it when I get it.
I don't think that mine has the CLB but I have to check it out. Assuming it doesn't, I'm thinking the LMC5 may be the way to go. I can't find anyone saying there are issues with it messing up the BCM or anything so if I need one I guess that'll be it. Looks easy enough to install.
Edit: Just saw your post bj1k - I'll be watchin' for your outcome!
Below is an email I got from a forum member when I was having the problem...:
At first glance I would say you have all of the GM recall mods...most likely 3 things:
1. GM K-Harness
2. the additional relay in the passenger footwell
3. removal of the steering column lock ring
What this means is the K-Harness is the GM version of the CLB latching relay. It also leaves the column lock motor in the circuit connected up to the K-Harness. The locking ring replacement means everytime you insert the key or remove the key, the column lock motor tries to lock/unlock but there is not lock ring for the pin to engage into. So your steering wheel will never lock. When the K-Harness latching relay is getitng close to failure, it will frequently get out of sync and you will get the "pull key and wait 10 seconds" message....meaning it needed another cycle to get the latching relay back into the proper state again so the BCM is happy again. The locking motor does nothing in the circuit except provide a nice filter on the 12V line to minimize the possibility of a spike on the line which could get the latch into the wrong state. The relay circuit under the passenger footwell simply locks out the "locking" signal once you start the car so the possibility of locking the steering wheel while driving is eliminated. This was implemented prior to the removal of the locking ring.
OK...so what should you do after reading all this crap? My advice is to remove the K-Harness and replace it with an aftermarket CLB purchased at Corvettes of Houston. It leaves the steering column motor permanently out of the circuit. I would leave the relay in the footwell as is unless you see unreliable operation of the aftermarket CLB.
Also from another post:
The "pull key" message is not always indicative of a column lock problem.
This message can happen for many reasons...basically, anytime the BCM "gets confused" during startup, it will happen. Some of the common causes (and I'm sure there's more) are:
The quick key out/in/restart will do it every time.
A dirty key resistor pellet will cause it.
The column lock malfunctioning can also cause it.
Because the latter of the above cases has proven to be very common...all too often, people tend to automatically equate this error message to the column lock, and that's not always the case.

The LMC5 is cake to install. Took no time to install and the instructions are idiot proof. The original one I got gave me the pull key message. They swapped me for a version 2 module and that has worked like a charm since. I highly recommend that approach. But if you're locked already, you have to take care of that first before installing the module.

Did your fuel cutoff engage when you got the message ? Mine did right after installing the LMC5 . I'm still waiting on the second version module . Hope it fixes mine. I don't know why the first design module works for some cars and not for others.
Thanks again for the additional information, I forwarded the link to my son who printed it out for his mechanic, thus far the key and battery were eliminated today, we are hoping they have more time to work on it tomorrow.

Give Richard a call.....his service has always been great. I've never heard of it taking this long for him to get another LMC5 to a customer.
Son got his car back, $500 to replace a relay. I am doing a remodel of my garage so couldn't check anything out. First task when garage is finished is to install a LMC5 . Thanks for the advice.
I contacted GM (bought my C5 used) they stated the GM CLB fix was done already. My column lock still works and I can hear the column lock motor. I don't have any issues with the CL. My question is do ALL C5 Corvettes have CL issues or just some unlucky few?

You're just delaying and hoping it'll go away, it won't. get the CLB, forgetaboutit.

Since you did 2 recalls at dealer, the only true fix is to have the PCM edited so that the CL fuel cutoff is set to 255mph. Any Corvette tuner shop that can do this for you.
If you did only the first recall then a CLB would have been the only thing you needed (49.00)

All M6's are prone to column lock and A4's to 2001(I think) as well. All others should have a CLB or equivalent.
