you only need the unlocker with the LMC5 if the column won't unlock by itself. if you're buying the bypass, i don't understand why you wouldn't go ahead install it before the lock screws up, but that's just me. mine worked every time, but i went ahead and put in the LMC5 so i ain't got to worry about it later - that & i got tired of leaving my keys in the ignition everywhere.

Answer this question to your self:
Does your cars column lock with NO KEY in the ignition????
If you answered YES, then 2 items to consider:
1) If your NOT going to install the product immediately then what would you do if the column lock symptoms occur and the failure is with the column locked????????
2) If you are going to install it immediately, how are you going to get the column unlocked???? An unlocked column is a requirement to be able to install either a CLB or an LMC5.
If you answered NO then you don't need the unlocker.
There are other ways to unlock the column to be able to install either after market product just as an FYI.

To install the LMC5, the first step will be to disconnect the battery. Your column will be locked at that time. You will need the unlocker to unlock the column lock during the installation. I really don't know why they don't include the unlocker with the LMC5. There are ways around it but the installation instructions only tell you how to unlock it with the unlocker.
when I order I will get the unlocker too!

Say what? Just when I thought I had a handle on this, I "don't" need the unlocker? Right now the lock works and I have not had a problem, so I was going to install this part before any problems arise! I don't want to be out during the driving season and have any problems if I'm along ways from home base.

for a properly-functioning column lock, you can buy the extra unlocker cable if you want, but it's unnecessary. i'm glad i ain't gone one more part just sitting around taking up space.

If your column unlocks when you turn the key to ON, you may try this alternate column unlock procedure BEFORE beginning the LMC5 installation: Turn the key to ON, then remove fuse 23 in the passenger footwell fuse panel. Remove the key and verify the steering wheel remains unlocked (repeatedly turn and also tilt the steering wheel). Proceed to the LMC5 installation, and replace fuse 23 after completing Step 1.

LMC5 Installed
Installed mine over the weekend and worked fine.
My 2000 Auto already had the the recall years back so did not have to unlock it.
Instructions were very clear and easy. Just be patient when switching the wires in plug.
Prior to install I was getting both error messages and now they have dissapeared.
I highly recommend this product!
