Hey everyone...
I'm flying down to San Jose Friday morning to (hopfully) pick up a black on black '02 z06 vette with 39k miles! Just gonna have the dealer there inspect it, is there anything i can look for or be aware of when im test driving/looking at it? its been auto crossed but the carfax is clean, two owners both over 5 years! Im so excited! Im coming from 2 seperate s2000s, ive owned other cars: lexus sc300 5spd, WRX, Mazdaspeed6, Acura CL (dont buy just fyi) and two s2000s. The s2ks were amazing but i stumbled onto c5 z06s and i couldnt believe what i was reading, price per mpg, performance, looks etc. i HAD to get one! I called my insurance (i am 24) and the rates only raise $600/yr. Not a problem for this scary beast!!! Cant wait to drive it home 10 hours on tuesday (if it checks out)
-Mike
How often was it auto crossed and what are they asking for it ? That could be a hard 39k miles on it !
Not saying that theres anything wrong with it but the drive train could be beat hard , theres alot of cars out there for sale dont rush

First thing you're going to want to do as soon as possible is get the valve springs changed, especially if it's an '02 model. PAC 1218 or 1518s are a good choice for peace of mind.
That's really the only weakness with the car, and a cheap fix. The rest of the drivetrain is pretty rock solid (assuming it hasn't been beat to death on the track of course ).
You should check with you insurance agent to see if you can get collectors insurance. Even though my z's are not 20 years old i could get collectors because its a "collectible car" at a way cheaper price. I pay just under $500 a year on each one of my z's for full coverage. I do think you have to have another car as you main transportation. Just something to ask about. May be different for other states. Also you can run all the codes that the car doesn't have cleared very easy. I think its hold down options and hit fuel three times. If you search you can find the codes list on the forum.
The guy said he hasn't auto crossed since 2010 and I have no idea I'd the first owner did at all! I'm paying 21,000. I do def plan on doing valve springs and a CLB! Love your guyses input please keep w the info!
By auto x'd.. do you mean timed racing around cones in a parking lot? If so, I wouldnt worry that much about it... But if you mean road raced on a track then I wouldnt be paying that much for it.
Awesome, welcome to the black z club. You're going to have a blast and when it's clean, it's going to look amazing. That being said, enjoy the 15 seconds of clean. Black does not like to stay that way.
overall condition is one thing i would look at. paint should be in great shape, interior should be as well. 21k is about the going rate for that mileage, i would just do what you can to make sure it's really that low of mileage. check the exhaust tips as well. should be dark grey. if they are coal black or especially sticky black you may have an oil burner that suffered oil starvation at some point
Hey guys, update: got myself a mint 2003 z06 with 29k miles! It was in Oregon to boot! I'm in love, its clean as a whistle and I paid $23k. It does need tires but I have a feeling I'm gonna need to get used to that! My plans are oil change(engine/diff/trans). Tires, maybe a CLB and a new shift ****!
