Anyone here paint their rotor hubs while the wheel is off? Mine are 'ok' but I would like to spruce them up. I have a Black Z with the painted wheels. I don't want red, and I'm not sure I want those covers either. Thanks!
Just try and aim for the hub of the rotor. I did this once with disregard to how much of the rotor I covered .. needless to say, I had a bunch of paint in my pads that needed cleaning off.
mine were rusty and i sprayed with a rust coverter, available at boat us or other marine store, it turns them black and kills the rust. Then painted with gray rustoleum hamertone and they have looked like new for two years now.

This stuff? If so it is also available at Ace Hardware for $5.99. I have one here in town that if this is the stuff I'm gonna give it a try!!

I made the same, but worse mistake on another car and had to replace the pads. Did anyone brush other than spray? I've used hammertone many times and it comes out great.
Did mine this way.
Pull the wheel. Clean the surface of the hub area with brake cleaner. Then clean with Methyl Alcohol. Mask the entire rotor surface with masking tape. Get your box cutter or scalpel type knife. Spin the rotor observing where the brake pad passes over the masking. Place the knife blade against the closest part (to the hub) of the caliper or pad. Press it into the masked tape. Spin the wheel. Cuts a perfect circle. Peel the inside leaving the outer tape on the rotor. Now spray with VHT caliper paint. I used black.

How well does the hammertone show thru the wheel spokes?

THAT is a great idea! I'm assuming the tape clears the distance between the pad and rotor?
You know I was doing some work on the brakes at the same time.
I may have had the pads out of the calipers at the time. Can't truly recall. Masking tape is fairly thin - I think it would work either way.
it is actually a rust converter, repeat converter, it kills the rust and turns it black so you don't have to sandpaper, Just paint over it.
