I just purchased a 2004 convertible with 28,000 miles that had a strong gas smell upon filling the tank. Purchased a new cap, improved somewhat, however still a smell. Never had a similar problem on my 1999 C5 convertible.
Some of the vin numbers were repaired mine was one of them not affected buy this , the pipe is stainless I think and goes from the top of the tank , I'll try and find a pic for you .Ron
Have a look at the crossover pipe between the 2 tanks , I guess some of them leaked , but it 's hard to see ,
It could also be nothing more than simply a gas smell coming from a full tank. Mine has the same problem but I had it in the shop for three days with them checking every possibility. I discovered that if I don't do any hard acceleration after filling the tank up and wait until I've burned some gas off I don't get the smell.
I am so appreciative of this information. I will definitely take it into my Chevrolet dealership for attention. A suggestion such as the above show how valuable this forum is to less informed such as myself!

I had this happen on my 04 CE Coupe - thanks to the efforts of a group here on the forum they got GM to realize this is a serious problem and now there is a service bulletin for those cars impacted by this. I ended up needing to have both gas tanks replaced plus all the necessary plumbing - I was told the the bill was over $1700 and it didn't cost me a penny. Another example of how this forum is so helpful.
the SB is still active based on your VIN, take it to a dealer and have them check. I haven't had a problem with my 04 yet but was told I could have everything replaced as long I get it done by 2/2014.
