Default New Tire Question's

Hi

I will be shopping for new run flats soon, what would you recommend?

2002 coupe auto summer driving only!

I put on maybe 2000 miles a yr.

Approaching 23,000 miles.

I have the orig tires Goodyear's, plenty of tread but it is 11 yrs old covered
in my garage.

Thanks

Alan

I'd recommend getting something other than run-flats.

I just mounted a pair of Nitto 555 ZR Extreme's in place of the last two run-flats on the rear of my car and it's like driving a different car. I'll never do run-flats again.

I've had both Goodyear and Michelin run flats. Not sure how much is the car (on different cars), but the ride of the Michelins is much smoother. Regardless of the car, the Michelins are much quieter. If I stay with run flats, the next set will definitely be the Michelins.

I think Continental DW's would be good especially since it's a summer only tire. And the price for four is very reasonable. I have them on one of my cars and will switch to these for the Corvette when the Goodyears are done.

Not a run-flat fan, have Michelin Pilot Super Sports, AAA card, small air compressor and a plug kit.

I have Michelin RFs, they are an upgrade over the GYRFs, but I urge you to go non-RF

Go with the Hankooks and get AAA

Wow! Your driving on 11 year-old OEM run-flats?! Those must be as hard as Fred Flintstone's wheels!

I recommend non run-flats but if you still want run-flats, I suggest Michelins.

at 2000 miles a year i would get the best performance tire you can find. mileage isn't really a problem as 8 years {which is longer than i would ever drive a sport tire} is only 16k miles

bridgestone re11 comes to mind or you could use the forum fav the hankook v12

Honestly, anything is going to feel like a huge upgrade over the 11 year old ones you have on now

Michelin... I let mine sleep all winter also, but have the A/S ZPs for the 30 - 40 degree days that I drive in November. Had the PS2 ZPs on the '01 and really didn't like them for cornering in the cold weather.

The TPMS will still work just as they do now as the type of tire has no bearing on their operation, and yes, the next owner can put any type of tire they want to on the car just as you are.

If those are the original TPMS I would recommend changing all four, the batteries in them have a life span of about 10 years.

I love my Michelin run flats also if your tires are 11 years old then your sensors are also 11 years old. Might be time to change your TPMS also.

Can't l just change the batteries? And if not how much do they cost?

If l replace my tires with non run flats should l still replace the TPMS's?

Thanks

There are threads on here about changing the batteries, involves breaking open the old sensors and (I'm guessing , gluing them back together). Seem to remember someone offering to do it for you, but you still have to pull them and the send them to him, if the car is a daily driver that's not an option. I got a set for about $175 from Gene (Forum vendor) but they were for my '03, the earlier years cost more.

You really don't need them with the non run flats and I'm sure if you do a search someone will know how to disable the error messages to the DIC.

Discount Tire rebuilt my TPMS sensors with new battery's in my 99 FRC when I had my Nitto 555's installed. The Nitto's replaced Kumho run-flats that rode like crap, were loud as hell, and handled like crap as well. If you drive 2,000 miles a year than I'd just get some nice performance tires.

This is what I have. Very quite and the A/S gives better cornering during the colder months.
