I live in the city, and work downtown. I don't need a truck and it would be a huge inconvenience for me. I would assume you are right though, people in the south will say different things.
Pffft.... I never let anyone make me feel bad about what I do with my money. It is all strictly for my own personal enjoyment. And I am one happy **** driving this car.
That said, my next vehicle will probably be a truck... because it is MY pleasure to buy one... not what anyone else would have me do. :P
I have to admit I didn't want to tell my parents I was looking to buy a new car (I just bought my 03 Z06 one week ago today). I thought they would try to make me feel bad about spending that kind of money on a vehicle, but it turned out my dad was rather excited lol. The night before I was to drive down and check out the car we ended up watching a bunch of TV shows on Corvette history.
That is all there is down here is Corvettes and Pickup Trucks/SUVs at a ratio of 99/1 in favor of trucks. I heard this morning that the F-150 is the #1 selling vehicle in the USA currently.
All the women here are impressed with pickup trucks and SUVs. All the MANY comments I get on my C5 are from men - women out here only want a pickup or a bus (explains why I have no interest in the women out here as well). I spend half my time on the road cussing pick-up trucks - already had to replace 3 windshields on my C5 from the rock slingers.
If they were needed, I would understand, but I rarely see a pick-up truck with anything in the back (they would not dare haul anything with them) and the women all drive Escalades by themselves through McDonalds alone while dragging seating for 20 behind them! And I am the crazy one.
One of each, but the '04 Colorado blew a head gasket at 140K. Bought it used, not knowing that's what they do at 140K. My fault, I didn't do the proper research for problem areas. It needs a new head, or an LS swap
I think I'll ditch the Colorado and get a Legacy Outback.
Came across this nice looking Jeep up in Washington State. Thought it looked bad-*** so I spent a day or two haggling the price down. Got a steal on it at the time.
My other Corvette buddy saw it and said "Jeeps are for girls." I think that haunted me for a while, so after letting it sit for more days than I drove it, I finally dumped it for a few grand less than what it was worth street value. Ok, I dumped it for alot less than what it was worth!!! That's ok. I just invested that interest into a 2013 C6 Z06.
I still think the Jeep looked bad-***. And my buddy still thinks I was crazy to buy it to begin with.
It must be more of a redneck thing. I guess rednecks think everyone should have a truck because in the 36 years I have owned various years of Corvettes, I have never had anyone tell me I should have bought a truck.
Already had a truck. Already had a Harley. The wife needed another daily driver so we sold her Z28 and bought her a Vette. Not a single question yet as to why.
I live in SC too, never been told I need a truck. All I've been told is that I need a Mustang again by my friends in the Mustang world...which isn't gonna happen unless its a great deal on one of the new 5.0's
That being said, I would like to have a truck or a Jeep just for the convenience of it, but not at the cost of getting rid of my Corvette.

If I could find the "shop truck" I want (47-53 Chevy 5-Window) in the right condition, patina'd w/o rust through, then I'd get that in addition to the C5, but not replace it.
I also live in the deep south north Mississippi, most guys here do own a jeep or a truck. But the really lucky guys like me own all three.
1989 Jeep wrangler
2004 Chevrolet Z/71
2004 corvette
Not deep south but
2012 Grand Cherokee Overland (Wife's DD and more luxury car than Jeep/SUV!)
2001 Corvette Convertible (My pride and joy!)
2005 Dodge Dakota (For hauling things!)

Reason: Dakota, not Durango
I don't get any reactions yet except when I'm in the Porsche. I had a 2011 GMC Sierra shoved down my throat as a company vehicle by my boss (also my father) so he'd have something to haul HIS crap in.
Still working towards that first C5, then I don't care what happens to the truck (except that I won't drive the Vette in the winter). People who don't know or understand vehicles always think you have big money when you drive a fancy sports car, but unless you're buying new, I'll bet their Acura cross-over or brand new GMC Sierra cost more than our toys!
I like my 2 Corvettes ( 1992 and 2002 Z06) and I do not have a truck. However, when I need to haul 4X8 sheets of plywood, 50 inch TVs or furniture, I just put the top down on my 1936 Packard convertible sedan and load it up. The people at the lumber store think I am a bit off.
