Default 2nd Impression- 2002 Z06

Hey Guys- Just wanted to share some thoughts on my recently purchased Z06. Having sold my 94 6 speed coupe, I was in the market for a 2005 manual coupe, or a C5 Z06. The first car i drove, I ended up buying. It is a black 2002 with red/black interior. During my test drive with owner, we drove it about 30 miles and I fell in love. It was worlds apart from my C4 in every aspect but performance ??? My C4 had LT's and muffler eliminators, so it sounded fast. Next day, pissed off the wife, took my cash and picked up car. While driving home alone, i found myself getting on the highway with no traffic and a smooth, dry service road. I slowed to about 15mph, grabbed first gear and thought what the hell. Hammered it, tires broke loose, got out of it, hammered second, tires broke loose again. If i would have stayed in it, I would have been sideways at about 50mph. I have owned some old school hot rods over the years, but this 11 year old car, with 70k miles is a BEAST.

I agree!

2 months ago I upgraded from an 85 L98 to the 02 Z06 LS6.

What a difference!!! Greater creature comforts and a blast to drive.

Wow, that must have been quite a quite a difference in power and handling! I came from a 375 whp 97z with lots of suspension work. It was a match for the c5z in the 1/4 but thats about it. when it comes to handling there is no comparison. To the op, I do the same runs pretty much every time I take mine out

It evens gets better. A mid size cam in these motors is really something. I enjoy mine every time I drive it.

Outlaw, you will see that posted HP numbers just brings everybody out of the woodwork. It's just such a variable number of the type of Dyno and many other things. One thing we all will agree to is that the LS motor really likes more cam than the stock lift / duration. If you read some of the many other threads you can find some posted HP numbers, heck you can find mine also. Anyway if you want a little extra zip a mid size cam will more than make you happy.

Thanks for the responses guys. Beginning the mod wish list now. Vararam VR-B2 and CAGS eliminator on the way. I would like longtubes and possibly cat-back exhaust next. I will be honest, the stock titanium exhaust howls like a banshee, when your on the gas !! Maybe a cam change after these mods, but i dont want to adversely affect the driveability or mpg too much.

Question- did these cars come factory with drilled and slotted rotors ??

I feel the same way. I bought mine 2 months ago and enjoy driving it every day.
I came from a 95 right hand drive r33 nissan skyline with a 2.5L inline 6 turbo motor pusing about 220rwhp on rock-stiff suspension, to my '04 z06. World of difference. The tq difference is unreal. And the vette is soo much smoother in riding compared to my skyline. Skyline was all manual. No traction control, no abs. I feel lke im in a luxury car now. haha.

MPG is all dependent on your tune. Mine would be better than the 17-18 I get if it weren't for the horrible Hawaii traffic and I put down 470rw stock cubes NA with my H/C/I setup. These cars respond incredibly well to cams and such.

I think it's the driver's fault here. Sounds like he is granny shifting and double clutching and just doesn't know his car.

Aloha Kerry!

Which H/C/I? Sounds like a 346 making that much rwhp would buck and surge a lot around a parking lot or whatnot...

If a car is tuned properly, this will not happen.

Kerry...not jealous, I have places I can 'really' drive the car here, so enjoy H-3. lol

mph1972, can you move the car in first gear clutch-only without the car getting angry (no throttle)?

When I had my CAMMED ZO6, after it was completed tuned it drove like a stock car in all gears. Not sure if this answers your question, key is finding a tuner that takes pride in their abilities and ensures your ride is tuned for all types of driving. Street, highway and WOT.

Depends on where your idle is set. At 850 rpms, and a 228-232@112 mid/small cam I could easily no-throttle start on a level road, but now with a 224-232@116 blower cam, and the tuner set the idle @ 800 it's very difficult. Part of the difficulty is caused by my clutch/hydraulic combo. Either NA, or FI, a cam is a big power adder, and since I changed cams, I want to go back to a bumpier grind; just for the sound.

RJW-It does buck and surge a bit, but it is overcome pretty easily. Once I got it retuned about 6 weeks ago all of that stopped. If I let the RPM's fall too low it will start bucking and surging but otherwise it does just fine. Setup is 233/239 112lsa cam, FAST 102/102, PRC 215 heads w/ 60cc combustion chambers, ARH LT's and X.

These cars are beastly. Keep in mind that tires make a world of difference. Old tires are hard and have poor traction. Buy the right tires and it will reduce the spin and put it more towards GO.

I daily drive my Z and went with a high performance tire vs an ultra high perfomance tire. I can really tell the difference. What I gained in wet traction, I lost in dry grip. I can break loose at 70MPH with a stock set-up and winding through the gears. I like the general performance of my Continental DWS tires but when its go pedal time not so much.
