I have had my C5 for 3 years and very seldom the red check engine would come on. I had step by step instructions on how to get it to turn off but I lost them. Can someone help me? Thanks

I agree, That message is telling you something isn't right.
To get the codes here is how you do it.
Turn the key to the ON position, but don't start the engine. Clear any present messages by pressing the RESET button. Hold the OPTIONS button down, and press the FUEL button 4 times. This will get you into the CODES section of the DIC. The computer will automatically display all the codes your car has created. It will cycle through each code every 3 seconds. Any code that ends in H is a history code (something that has occurred in the past) but is fine now. Once the computer has finished going through all of it's codes, press RESET to enter Manual Configuration mode. It should start with a module and show "NO CODES" or "# CODES".
To optionally reset the codes once in manual mode, press and hold RESET until it displays "NO CODES". Press OPTIONS to go to the next module. Repeat the steps in this paragraph until you have reset the codes in all the computer modules. NOTE !! Only reset the codes IF you want to - it is NOT necessary to do this.

Check Engine isn't RED, it's amber/yellow. If you have a RED lamp on, you have something else going on.
mine came on while driving the other day, filled the car with fuel and no more red light!!
let me try this again..i was on the way home, whileon the expressway my fuel ga was showing low with 50 miles to empty..i calculated that i could make it to my favorite gas station..before reaching the gas staion my check engine light came on, and i do believe that it was red. i simply took that as an advanced signal of extremely low fuel.
has anybody else experience this? car was running fine when this happened and as stated before after filling up no more light. i really did not give it another thought.

Let me try this again, If it was red that is the check gauges light and being low of fuel makes sense, The check engine light is yellow and the same on all C5's.

Why do you think he has fuel gauge failure? He said he was low on fuel and knew he could make it home, Not he had plenty fuel and gauge read empty.
Just wondering.
I believe he said the light went off after filling up. Also part of the fuel gauge thing. I thought I had mine cured after many bottles of techron, but it came on again the other day. (On a run to Wendover, Bill). I've learned to reset the codes and it comes back to normal. Just watch the road while doing that!

Wendover, Never been there, I do know where it is...lol
How can you help anyone when they don't know the difference between check engine and check gauges or the difference between RED/AMBER idiot lights? Garbage info IN, Garbage answer OUT.
