Just hold on until one of our very own (2002_z06) gets his and can give us an in depth un-biased review. Until I hear from HIM, all other banter is Bu77Schitt :smash:
My friend just went to the dealer to pick up his new '03 cobra. After test driving it, he decided not to buy it. He said it just didn't seem quick enough.
He will stick with his '93 Z28 (with mods).
Re: Z06 vs 03 cobra... (Mr turbo rotary)...SAW ONE RUN AT THE TRACK...
In Muncie, IN., which is about 1ooo ft elevation and not a great track. Saw a 2000 Corvette with air bix, exhaust (made 333 rwhp) run 13.1 @ 103. Kind of hot day, not perfect conditions. This 03 blue Cobra with a 19 year old kid, 500 miles on it (made about 360 rwhp a week before) ran 12.6 (didnt see mph)...and it is bone stock down to the tires (didnt even adjust pressure) filter, etc. These new Cobra's are for real, and that car with a good driver would have been 12.4's easily..the kid cant drive or shift. I hate to say it, but for $35,000 it aint bad. This car with a pulley, drag radials, complete exhaust will be high 11's. Unfortunately, not too many vettes around here race and the Zo6's in Ft. Wayne drive around a lot and rev up their cars but NEVER race. I am glad to see people on this forum actually do race them. If they could get the weight down from 3600+ lbs on the Cobra, the Vettes and Vipers could be in serious trouble!!! Again, I hate fords and have never owned one, but damn.... for less than $2000 in mods that mustang would be an 11 sec. street car on pump gas and radials...and they arent too bad as far as interior, similar to Vette quality, and much better than F bodies. I hope the LS6 becomes standard invettes soon, and the ZO6 gets something nasty. HATE seeing that blue Cobra beating Vettes....and he does!
Re: Z06 vs 03 cobra... (Mr turbo rotary)...SAW ONE RUN AT THE TRACK... (StreetRacingGuy)
Well, there is a guy on one of the other forums has one, with lightning pulley and some other mod ( can't remember what it was, as I really "DON'T KNOW, DON'T CARE) and it only did a 12.9. DA was somewhere around 900 feet. The Cobra will be a player, but it is a Mustang! I would bet ninety some percent of all Mustang owners would trade their Stang for a Vette if they could afford one. I would also bet, that if us Vette owners had a choice between a Vette and a Stang, 99+ % would choose the Vette. (hey wait a minute we already have chosen, that is why we hange out on the CORVETTEFORUM.COM!

Yeah,
I hear a lot of whistling at the dark here. The 2003 Cobra is going to make a lot of us irritated. Sure, we have a classier car. It handles better, probably loads better. But, it will still be awfully annoying when we can't leave one in the dust. And even more annoying when the Stangers start turning up the boost and leaving us sitting there wondering what the heck happened.
Chevy needs to make sure the C6 addresses this problem.
Well I now have first hand evidence that the 2003 Cobra is more than just trouble for stock C5's...
Today I saw one and followed the guy onto an empty road. We got next to each other and traded smiles and thumbs up. He got on it hard while I watched and that thing rips like a ****! I was stunned to see the car pull that hard. I got next to him rolling at about 25mph in second gear and dropped the hammer.
I obviously wasn't in the optimal gear, but he had to downshift and right as he hooked and the supercharger really kicked in we were right at about full tilt. Let me tell you, no driver skill involved, from a relatively even circumstance and a roll, he didn't just not get his butt whooped up to about 85, he stayed on my door not losing an inch. It was quite a sight. And damn does that car sound good
After we complemented each other on our cars, and he commented that his buddy has a carbon copy of my car and when they run each other it usually ends with the Z06 a car length ahead. And I can believe it...
Don't get your panties in a wad because a Mustang can hang with you guys on the road. Who cares? There's NO reason to hate Ford, and there's no reason for "Ford Guys" to hate Chevys. It's ridiculous. Yes, the Cobra is fast, and it's going to get faster as the years progress. Yes the Z06 is fast. How about mutual respect for one another, not some burnt-out rivalry.
EDIT: Go ahead and bash me. I'm not a Ford guy, I'm not a Chevy guy, and I'm not a MOPAR guy either. I'm a car guy. An unbiased guy with respect for cool cars.
I can not believe this conversation is even taking place!!!! There is a guy here in my town with a Opel that runs 10's. Big whoop!! I still would not want to drive it (just like the Cobra). It is like my Ferrari buddy's. I can Tear the a** out of there 360 Modena's around Sears Point in my Z06, but there smile is a ton bigger than mine!! Just a different class of ride. Just like the Z and the cobra. I Think the late model Cobra is just a insult to Carol Shelby (my dad has a original 427 cobra and that is one ford i would drive)!!
With all due respect, I think you are smoking crack. :D The new Cobra is a true credit to Carroll Shelby.
Some of us here aren't Chevy Fanatics, we are CAR fanatics. The car I owned before I bought my 2000 Coupe 2 1/2 years ago was a 93 Cobra.
Here are the facts:
The Cobra weighs a good chunk more, and has little less hp, but...
A. It's supercharged. It is NOTHING to turn up the boost. And Ford KNOWS how Mustangers are, so they build them to handle some extra hp. We will have a lot of Cobras running low 12's, or high 11's very soon.
B. It costs $15k less than a Z06!!!
C. While they (the back seats) are small, and only useful for short trips, it is a four seat car. My Z06 is my only car. There are times when a rear seat would be nice.
Yes, the Z06 handles better and probably will beat a Cobra in turns.
But for $36k or so, you have a lot of money left over to play with it.
It is a pretty nice car and if folks want to be snobbish about it, they can. But I love all fast cars, and I will show them the respect they deserve. And if they crank them up a few notches over the next couple of years, and Corvette doesn't, then I'll probably buy one.
So why can the Cobra run with the Z06? Area under the curve is greater than the Z06. Note that the torque curve for the Cobra starts much lower. 1,300 rpms lower. So that car is pulling like a monster (390lbs at 3,500 rpms!!!) from way down low. While the Z06 has to be driven more precisely. We need to be much closer to 5,000 rpms before we have the same torque as a Cobra.
My guess, looking at the limited numbers available here, is that the area under the hp curve for a Cobra is higher than the Z06, which compensates for the extra weight.
In a quarter mile, when coefficient of drag becomes a factor, the Z06 begins to pull ahead on the top-end. But for the first half of the track, the Cobra hangs.
My guess is that the Cobra is going to feel faster because of the torque coming on so low, and it will be less picky about how well you drive it, since it is going to be so torquey.

My post above fits with your story. Had you gone to first, you probably would have beaten him by a length or so. But the Z06 won't be as forgiving about being in the wrong gear as the Cobra will.
