Default Corvette Tax ?

So, I came across billet oil caps on Fleabay. With the stick on C5 logo, they are $23.99 and with the Mobil 1 logo they are $13.99. Now, that is a $10 difference. Same cap except the stick on logo difference. Some licensing fee !!

No ****, you'd think GM would just get their money straight from the treasury and not bother us with this licensing crap.

Default I was thinking to be fair that

maybe it costs more to make the C5 logo sticker, but $10 does seem a bit much.

If they're truly licensed it costs a ton of money so I can see why they'd have to charge more. I don't even see how $23.99 would cover it.

Default Hey JW&W

I appreciate your perspective based upon your knowledge of the industry. Those licensing fees must be a nice chunk of change for auto makers. I don't see much profit in that for the vendor either.

Still not a bad price for the oil cap. The factory one costs more than that I believe and it doesn't look anywhere near as good.

Why do you feel that you need the C5 logo anyway? Everyone knows it's a C5 since it is already plastered all over the car. There is such a thing as overkill. Tell them to shove it !

It's possible that Mobile actually helps the manufacturer use their logo, and GM charges for the Corvette logo. I know when I was really into Lionel trains, I found out the certain manufacturers paid Lionel and/or defrayed decal expenses in order to put their logo on a train car.
It's possible Mobile supports the manufacture of the unit with their logo. We all know what GM does when you want to use the Corvette Flag$$$$.

That the caps look good in pics for the price. I now have the possible answers to my initial question. I certainly don't begrudge our vendors a fair profit. Our parts are still a lot cheaper than those for some German cars. I have a friend with a Porsche Cayenne and a Merc E class. He is always dropping 5-600 on parts and services I can get for 1/3 that amount. And, he can't hang with me and chicks never notice him...... a Corvette tax rebate!

This is not new. I remember when I was young (many years ago) speaking with the auto parts guy and he showed me the books where for example if you ordered a set of points for a chevy II it would list one price but if you ordered the same part for say a corvette or a cadilac the price would be considerably higher even though it was the same part with the same manufactures part number.

As long as fools keep on buying the stuff at stupid prices they will make it. Simple supply economics driven by demand.
