Default Forced Induction

i figure General section gets a lot of traffic than FI so I figure i post this here.. but lately I have been playing with the idea of going FI on my 98 coupe... can someone teach me what I need to know on how to make the most power out of my ls1 block without blowing it to pieces?

car is 98 coupe mn6 full exhaust Z06 heads/intake, smallish cam, 396/386 to the wheel.. is it possible to get to 600? I know I have seen many over 600 easily but what did you have to do to get there and how much did you spend!?

A&A s/c and meth for safety....that will easily get you 600+rwhp.

look back a week or 2 ago a guy on fi with a torquer v2 and very low boost hit over 600 with stock heads. you will be able to hit that easy with just the centri and the fuel support-u have a 98 too so u dont need as much extra crap. and you can tune the 98 pcm at that level just fine. you will never fully understand what all everyone in fi means until you get it and learn a bit, unless you are a super trusting person

another thing too, i am sure you are worried about drivetrain components..... if you drive your car nice it will be fine and you wont notice the difference except power. things dont grenade til they give them a reason too. like neglect or abuse, and you can do those the same whether it be stock power or modified.

i have a 98 too-if you have any questions shoot me a pm. there are smarter people than me on fi tho

I'm in a 150,000 ish mileage 98 6spd too with cam, bolt ons, Vortec V3 headunit and it's so easy to be 550-600rwhp. Others have stated you can use your stock drivetrain if you don't beat on it. If that's the intent don't bother with FI. If you have the power but don't use it....why bother?

I upgraded my flywheel and clutch to LS7 components and hydraulics to LS6.

....and that's the bare minimum you should do.

So long story short, even with my mileage and my bolt ons my car should safely make 550-600rwhp with a blower?

Rick even with ur high miles you did you ever doubt ur motor handling all that power?

No....especially after the crazy dyno pulls. If it was gonna pop it would have then.

But before the pulls were finished I almost was crying fully expecting it to grenade any minute.

The tuner Joe Huneycutt said it's better to find out then, than later. If it makes good power and runs fine....don't sweat it.

Now I am of the opinion if it ever goes boom..... just start another forged bottom. It's only money right? You make more each day.

You know you want it so go ahead and do it. Besides even if you buy a C6 later, just put your Vortech V3 on it if you ever move in that direction. Once you SC your C5, it's going to be such an awesome car you might not ever look at a N/A car the same again. My car is such a power beast, it's not even in the same class it once was.

I've gotten a lot of advices on which direction to go with... But so far.. THIS has got to be the best one!! Never really looked at it that way... I always thought c5 Vortechs are non compatible to c6s ... This just opened another door for me! Thanks Rick!

600whp is asking a lot from the stock bottom end from what I hear if you like to go out and beat on it and spend lots of time at high RPM's I know a lot of people run that kind of power on stock bottom ends but reliability comes into question for me. Maybe im wrong. I have a heads/cam/Vortech Z06 and make 500whp on 4lbs of boost from a little V2.

What's ur set up right now? This is what confuses me a lot of similar set ups but everyone's # varies from 500whp to 600 plus?

what confuses me is how some people have similar set ups but have completely diff #s? is it cause of boost / tune? im planning to at least have a good set of clutch and rubber and maybe diff brace when or IF i ever decide to boost my 98... im really just trying to weigh out the pros and cons of the whole thing.

The numbers vary depending on tune and various items used. You need to decide what you want out of your car. Is it a drag car , track car, show car, or daily driver? Decide what you want. I'm content to have 550-600rwhp and drive it everyday. Some guys wouldnt want to "settle" with those #'s and want more!

honestly Rick, my car is daily driven like yours.. I put about 80 miles round trip daily.. on occassion I do want to take it to the mile/ half mile airport runs that they have here in Central California.. not too worry about smog so smog restrictions are off the table, from what i was told A&A kit with flip drive and meth kit should get me to 600hp. tons of guys on the FI section think the car should do 550hp easily with the base entry kit. really starting to lean more towards FI on the 98 especially that its almost paid off... but then again I still have to continue researching the best way to go for my situation, and everyones responses really help too!

The cam is 580 232/235 115* Heads are Trick flow heads. Im still not sure what specs on those are though. (I bought the car from the original owners wife after he passed away and she didn't know any of that stuff. All I have to go off is Mallett invoices and those dont specify specs.) either 215 or 220 with a 64cc chamber. Long tube heades and 3" exhaust all the way out. And like i said its a V2 Blower which i've been told is real small and known to not make a lot of power. I believe mallett also ported the factory intake. AFR's are set at 11.5 or so at WOT

Let me put it this way, most people with F/I can't give the car full throttle in 1st, 2nd, and maybe 3rd gear without losing traction. With F/I power levels in a C5, your speed is limited by traction more than anything. To me I like the feeling that you can give your car literally as much power as it can handle on street tires, you have the mindset that the engine has unlimited power, and you're just taking what you can actually use, and leaving some on the table for when you hit 4th gear.

Think of it like this. Your unit is so big that during the dirty you can only put it halfway in. Every man's dream, right?

That's what guys with "little *******" say! Size don't matter

Your close, but one can easily make their Vette hook with the proper tire and suspension, even for the street!

Blanket statements are never good! I have done both N/A and F/I - I'll stick with the F/I!

Thanks,Matt

Would not consider 600 HP with the stock bottom end, clutch, and stock differential.

500 HP is more than possible with Supercharger and stock bottom end with the components you currently have (Z06 Valve train, head, headers, and light cam).

If you want to go much over 500 and want a reliable car, I would suggest a motor swap.

Would there b any difference between a forged ls1 as to dropping in a bigger block ie ls2/lq9?

The main, and possibly, only difference between a V2 and V3 blower from Vortech is the method of oiling. The V2 or V3 designation tells nothing of blower size. The V2 uses the engine's oil so it requires tapping of the oil pan during install. The V3 houses its own oil, so it is totally independent from the engine oil and requires no tapping of the oil pan to install. Si trim, T trim, Ysi trim tell you the blowers air moving capability. There are many people, including myself, making north of 600rwhp with the little Si trim blower, but all of us are making more than 4# of boost.

If you swap the motor, the lower end should be forged regardless of if it's a LS1, LS2, or LQ9. The bigger displacement motor still has weak internals so it has, basically the same vulnerabilities as the LS1. Forging means you have the motor built with internal parts, such as rods, pistons, and maybe even the crank that are forged vs cast. The forged parts are better, as they are built to hold more power than stock parts.
