Well I took the cowl off and on the back side was some tape that had been holding the rubber seal in place...the tape was worn and broken down. So I just pushed the seal back onto the groove on the cowl and applied a 'glue' in place of the tape where it had given up its hold. I am sure I will have to come up with a better hold for the seal, but it is working for now.

I did that to mine when I had the cowl off for the chop a hole method of oil sender replacement. It's held up for years. I used a silicone adhesive.

I did pretty much the same thing with mine using window trim sealant. I didn't have to take mine apart though. So far it has lasted nearly two years without sign of deterioration.
I gotta do this too...not as much as the OP but a small section on the passenger side..
Go down to your local parts store and pick up a tube of window trim sealant. Use a toothpick to push the sealant into the slot the trim goes into, push the trim on, and hold it until it sets (about a minute or so). Carefully use a razor knife to trim any excess sealant. It only takes a few minutes to do. Nearly my whole piece of trim had come loose and I was able to have it done in about a half hour.
