I've used a wide variety of search formats but never one like we have on here. I assume I am doing it wrong. I seem to get everything BUT what I'm searching for. what is the proper procedure and why two search areas.
I have no issue but there can be a bit of a learning curve....the advance search allows you to be more specific and the Forum Tool drop down at the right limits you to the forum you are in. Some folks prefer Google as it returns Corvetteforum items as well.
Being a new member I'm always looking for things. Example: when I was looking for spark plug recommendations I entered spark plug in both areas and got back every thing from soup to nuts but no spark plug data.

Oh , I see what you are doing wrong , You have to put in soup to nuts and spark plug will come up. Seriously though I agree that sometimes it is just easier to use google to find things on the forum.

ahhh...use the advance search and search in the specific forums like C5 or C5 tech....that should help
You'll find that if you use Google and type in "spark plug recommendations for 65 corvette, corvette forum" or whatever. Just add corvette forum in the search term and it will bring up multiple threads from this forum.
One problem is that people use titles for their threads like "help" or "??", or "does anybody know", or "I have a stupid question" instead of "need help with spark plugs" or "corvette spark plug help". Using Google will search the entire thread and bring up the relevant ones.

I am of the opinion Google is the best search feature on here
Here is what I just put in the Forum Search and got back LOTS of "spark plug" specific answers:
Selected Advanced Search.
Under Keyword(s) I entered "spark plug" including the quotes so it will search on both words.
Under Sort Results by I entered Last Posting Date so I get the most current posts/info first.
Under Search in Forums I entered C5 Corvettes, 1997 - 2004 so I get info back from all the C5 related Forums.
Also, I often choose to "Search Titles Only" first, instead of "Search Entire Posts". This returns threads that are focused on the topic I'm searching. The downside is that it may leave out some threads...for example if he submitter titled their thread with "Hey all, I gotta a question" versus "Question about Spark Plugs".

Sometimes it can be a challenge to find exactly what you are looking for using the forum search function, but keep trying. You may have to experiment with how you word the search criteria, but it will work.
